Response to "Female radio host cuffed to chair, ticket ripped up..." (yeah, she made it up)

A YouTube video containing a radio interview of a woman who claims to have been cuffed to a chair at Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International airport after opting out of Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) has been circulating today. TSA takes situations such as this seriously and we immediately looked into it.

We diligently review claims of improper conduct. But when inaccurate passenger accounts are made either via media outlets or on the blogs, TSA works to resolve them and present both sides of the story. In this case, TSA has made the decision to post the CCTV video of the incident online.

to the FreeState group and appears on their broadcasts. I watched the videos, and what happened was not at all what she described. Notably, a whole bunch of people went through the backscatter scanner while she was sitting there waiting to be hand searched. She said she was "singled out." Looks like lots of folks were "singled out."

But my wife, who is also my business partner, and I fly about once a month, nationally and abroad. After about 75,000 seat miles in the last year, we're still looking for these horror shows at security, and not seeing them.

I think I did put on some mittens last year to shovel some snow, and I used to prefer them for skiing.

55. I went through the scanner, but have had issues with TSA over the yrs

they "needed" to send my tiny hearing aid batteries through the scanner to make sure they were really tiny hearing aid batteries. When asked if they could be hand examined as the scanner (at SeaTac) decreased their effective life to about 30 sec, was told no, they needed to be scanned. I asked if I could talk with a supervisor and he said there wasn't one available. When the guy looked at me as he said this, it was one of those "ok, do I want to fly or not".

I expressed astonishment that there were no supervisors and he just looked at me. Then he got one. Who held the tiny batteries in his hand, they are smaller than a pencil eraser, and agreed that if they were scanned they would show up as......tiny batteries. So he let me through without scanning them and told me to write TSA.whatever and let them know so they could change the policies.

Not groping, but still doing power-trips.

looks. Basically, that was it. But without the body language, a lot is missed.

I'm not sure why the life was shortened, but found it happening at the one airport, though I flew through (scanned at) several different ones. It happened 3 times in less than a yr, very odd. I was told "that won't happen", and in most airports it didn't. I finally tracked it down to SeaTac's scanners so asked them there.

No groping, sorry, just "The Look" as in quit wasting my time, I can have you arrested or taken away for interfering with my job. And I know, it was only about $30 that got ruined, but still. The supervisor was amused as yes, scanning them would show them for what they looked like, would do NOTHING different. And yes, he'd been standing there watching, hanging out, while the agent told me there wasn't a supervisor around.

I didn't exactly side with the woman but I would like to point out that in the exit video there is a significant period of time when the woman is out of frame behind a screened area beside the scan area.

We simply don't know what happened there and we shouldn't assume.

If you can't see what happened at some point in the tapes that the TSA is using as refutatory evidence then who do you know what happened during the time we can't see her.

This is not to say that I don't think that she exagerated and reported things that I clearly could see did not happen. However there is no audio and there is a period of time when we don't know wtf happened to her.

I'm just looking at the evidence. If I were a judge I would rule for the TSA based on what I saw on the 2 tapes, but is there more evidence there and did more happen. The TSA should retask one of the cameras so that the enhanced interogation area is in camera, IMHO.
