Your vomit-inducing thought for the day.
Edited on Tue Nov-02-10 12:24 PM by WilliamPitt
If the Senate races break 50-50, or even 51-49, Joe Lieberman will pretty much become the most powerful Democrat in the chamber. History has shown many times over that Mr. Lieberman is not reluctant about throwing his weight around in the caucus, and has never been shy about holding the party hostage to get what he wants.

The Doomsday Scenario for the Democrats, of course, is a 50-50 tie that allows Lieberman to hold a gun to the party’s head, said gun being a threat to switch parties and join the GOP. The Super Epic Doomsday Scenario would be Lieberman following through on such a threat and actually switching parties. Joe is still nettled at his former fellow Democrats after his last campaign, so it would not be a galloping shock to see something like this happen before too much time passes. It would be the Jim Jeffords scenario in reverse, and would hand all of Congress to the GOP (presuming the polls are right about the GOP taking the House today, that is).

So, yeah, watch the Senate races closely today. The smaller the majority margin becomes, the bigger Joe Lieberman gets.

1. That is a disgusting thought. But, I think we'll hold it by a margin
at least greater than +1.

4. Lieberman is NOT a democrat
Stop calling him a democrat. He is an "independent", a quisling idiot attention hog, but he deserted the democratic party.

6. I'm not so sure
The President and the White House has been pretty careful not to lean their political weight against him in instances where no one in our party would have cared enough to blink. He's still drawing some Democratic votes, I would think, to keep him in clover. I'm not sure if he could survive on just the votes of republicans and whatever 'independents' are willing to see him through, and I'm not convinced that he believes he can survive without some support from Democratic voters. Switching parties would cut those Democratic ties he's been so careful to hold onto (even if they're just threads).

11. It just means nothing more will get done, which isn't all that bad.
Leiberman can go slide down a fifty foot long razor blade, naked, into a pool of rubbing alcohol, for all I care, but really. Fuck him.

12. Lieberman traveled and campaigned with McCain.....
A better description of the guy would be "Bigot". What other explanation for suddenly spouting all the anti Democratic party lines with pro republican talking points thrown in instead? Just "happened" to correspond with the nomination of a black man for president.

Cornyn: GOP would 'welcome' party switch by Joe Lieberman
By Michael O'Brien - 11/02/10 09:42 AM ET

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said Senate Republicans would "welcome" any Democrats who wish to switch parties and caucus with the GOP.

Cornyn, the head of Senate Republicans' campaign efforts, floated the possibility that the GOP might target Sen. Joe Lieberman (Conn.), an Independent who caucuses with Democrats, or another Democratic senator if Republicans come close to winning a majority but fall short.

"I think he votes like a Republican on those areas, and we would certainly welcome him or any other Democrat who wants to switch sides of the aisle and caucus with us," Cornyn said of Lieberman during an Election Day appearance on Fox News.

17. People, my lovely Senator Lieberman is up for re-election in 2012.
What does he gain by switching for two years? Because he will never be elected as a Repub in CT. The switching twice is so overly cynical it just won't work for him. His poll #'s over the last year have been horrible enough for him. And if he does switch, what does he get out of it? Two years of ass kissing by Repubs? He already gets ass kissing from Dems. If he switches, I will know he really is retiring.

19. I'm guessing the Repugs will increase their senate majority
moving their 40-seat majority to maybe a 45-seat majority. Not a good sign for the downtrodden 55-seat Democratic minority.

Well, yes, there's Lieberman, who represents the interests of, uh, Lieberman.
