10. It's not different angles - the rallies were in different locations.
Becks was on the steps of the Lincoln memorial facing out to the reflecting pool...which took up the majority of the space in the picture. All those on the steps of the memorial were invited VIPs. Take them out and there aren't that many left.

66. It's not different angles
But the Beck picture is taken closer, more into the crowd. Look at the people in the forefront of each pic and compare size.

Still, the crowd is huge for the Stewart/Colbert rally. If you crop that pic so the relative sizes of the people are the same, one still clearly looks more packed.

breathe. He and his half-brother ended up leaving after about 90 minutes because the crush was so bad. Since my son lives in Arlington, VA, & works in D.C., though, it wasn't as though he had traveled far to attend. His brother lives in Chicago, but he came to see my son as well as to attend the rally, so again, no sense that they had wasted too much time or money to get to the rally, even though they didn't stay long. But this was historic--like Woodstock--so both wanted to be able to say they had been there.

It was BANANAS between 7th and the stage. I left my family to check in with a friend some 100 behind me. It took me about 5 minutes to walk away from the event, but nearly 45 to get back. 45 minutes to move forward 300 feet.

Freaking bananas!

76. It's really difficult to stand in one spot when the
crowd is pressing in. You can't move too much and your legs and arms get stiff because you can't switch your weight back and forth or move your arms. That happened to me at Obama's rally in my city before the election. By the time my son and I left, I could barely walk - but what a great feeling to be a part of something like that. I so wish I could have been at the Sanity rally.

made it up like 20 feet, and then we were rooting for him to make the final jump so he could sit comfortably, but he couldn't do it and ended up sliding back down while everyone booed

Hilarious indeed.

Another guy was not only 20 feet up, but climbed about 15 feet outward from the center sitting on a lone branch. brave indeed

21. I think it was larger than anticipated

Back in the "sometimes we can hear something" section, where I was, people stayed for the entire event JUST to be sure they'd be in the crowd pictures.

And, yea, there were folks crowding the streets a block away on the sides, because it was just too crowded to get onto the mall.

55. They were only prepared for 60,000 people.
That's the number they put on the permit. I think the official tally of 200,000+ is counting those on the sides. We should however remember that the Metro system was completely overwhelmed. There were some people who waited for over two hours to get a train with any room on it at all. We met one person who waited it out (the rally was over by the time he got there) but I'm sure many more never even made it into the city. I wish there was some way to get a representative sample so an estimate could be made and those numbers appended to the official estimate.

30. Not makin fun of older, disadvantaged or sick people by any means, but...
Also keep in mind that many of beck's rally participants took up more room due to walkers, wheelchairs, scooters and oxygen tanks, or just being overweight from a steady diet of propoganda...pretty much reflective of most fox snooz viewers. Makes the crowd look bigger than actual size.

This obviously pissed off the corporate media. I was there; it was extraordinary, and 10 times the Beck numbers.

But it doesn't matter; they will always give Beck 10 times the coverage. That's OK. It was a wonderful day, and won't be forgotten.

53. I was out there visiting museums while the Beck rally was going on. It was small.
There was another event for something entirely unrelated going on on the mall next to it. The subway wasn't crowded at all.

However, for yesterday's rally, the subway cars were packed like sardines. The whole mall was devoted to this the Stewart/Colbert rally. One could easily have missed knowing the Beck rally was even taking place. There was no way to miss yesterday's rally, however.

74. Metro Says Stewart Beat Beck At The Faregates
Washington's transit system reported that it set a new rail ridership record for a Saturday on the day of the Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert rally on the national capital Mall.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority counted 825,437 passenger trips on October 30, the date of the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, compared to 510,020 on August 28, the date of Glenn Beck's Restoring Honor rally.

That tends to bolster CBS figures that suggested the Comedy Central duo was a much higher draw than the Fox News host. A crowd size count commissioned by the television news network estimated 215,000 attended the Stewart/Colbert rally Saturday. A similar estimate for CBS found 87,000 attended the Beck rally in August.

The Stewart/Colbert rally produced the 17th busiest day in the Washington Metro's history and broke a Saturday ridership record that dated to June of 1991, when the subway logged 786,358 rides on the day of the Operation Desert Storm victory celebration on the Mall.

58. God, what a total failure yesterday's rally was
I mean, look at it: there's a hunk of ground about 10x10 in the lower right hand side of the picture that's only got two people in it. And there's this little hunk of ground about 5x20 toward the middle that doesn't have anyone at all. Obviously the organizers of this failed rally weren't trying very hard.

(Ya think I can get a job at Faux Noise now? Huh? Huh? Can I?)
