Appreciation thread for Keith, Ed and Congressman Alan Grayson...
Edited on Sat Oct-30-10 04:14 PM by mzmolly
who IMHO, were unfairly characterized as part of the problem, in an effort to appear balanced at today's 'sanity' rally.

:toast: to all three!

I enjoyed the rally thoroughly, regardless.

and I respect it. However, I think that there is a time for legitimate critique and a time to accept disappointment/reality and move ahead. After all, Stewart criticizes the President, aka the "dude" as well. ;) Regardless, I don't equivocate calling for the death of Doctors and comparing the President to a Nazi, to pointing out that doing so is both insane, and irresponsible. There are some whose rhetoric is harmful, if not deadly, and others who are are simply pointing that out.

28. And likewise, I don't believe you have actually watched Keith for the past 2 years either...
or you would know better than that he has "kicked the prez in the groin". I haven't missed a show in the past 2 years and I can tell you for a fact that where criticism of Obama was due, Olbermann certainly supplied it, but where he was to be praised, Keith also chimed in. He has not gratuitously "trashed" Obama.

You really don't know what he has said about "the prez" for the past 2 years because you have not watched! Admit it!

36. He has been over the top with bashing the repubs in the same fashion as
a Hannity. I watch almost every day and he is sometimes a caricature of himself. I am embarrassed for him. That is why I am so glad Rachel came on the scene. She is reasonable, and that is why she
gets the big interviews and Olberman doesn't.

Ed is unwatchable. He is way to extreme. I have burned out on the pundits. Give me the news, not theatrics or self important tv personalities that think their opinions shape the public opinion.

91. There s a problem with Jon Stewart's "calm down" approach.
People are dying in Afghanistan and Pakistan. People die here because they cannot afford health care. We still have extremely high unemployment. Yes. We should sit together and talk calmly about these issues. But the fact is that, as we talk, people are dying.

What do you propose doing about the urgency of life or death matters?

And what about torture and other human rights violations. Once a person's sense of self and sanity have been destroyed by torture, by lengthy imprisonments, by forced marches, it is too late.

In some cases, we really have to deal with sociopaths. It's nice to say that people with those personalities can be reasoned with, but it is not true.

Have you ever met a sociopath or even a very narcissistic person (clinically diagnosed)? How do you propose handling them. There are many of these types in powerful positions including in the government. What is your solution?

There is a difference between a basic respect for the office of the Presidency, and and understanding that a King makes law, without the limitations established in the U.S. Constitution.

that he called the President "Dude"... I don't think Obama was offended. I think both of them are at ease with one another. I think the President gave honest answers and wasn't cut off all over the place. And "Heckuva job" has become one of those phrases that we all say now as regular speech because of the huge gaffe.. I'm amazed at how many people repeat a Palin pun in their speech pattern because she's sooo over the top. (think about all the momma grizzly, betcha, lip sticks and pigs, and Putin's rearing head or seeing something from one's front porch have become common place?) also, too and in that... lol

I dont really blame Stewart though, he is just doing that to seem like a moderate who has problems with both sides. Seriously, if Stewart thinks Alan Grayson is in any way comparable to any of those right-wing psychos, I think I may have been imagining every daily show episode for the past 5 years. Grayson is everything that the Daily Show has claimed to want to see in a democrat times ten.

Regarding the topic of fear that the rally addressed... I feel that at times, fear is quite appropriate. Say, when a President is pushing a war for no good !#$ reason. There were far to few voices of healthy "fear" in the MSM, back in the "Operation Iraqi Freedom" days. All we heard was, rah rah rah.

They've been our sanity in many ways, and don't take crap from the teabaggers. What, does Jon want all the mockery of the fools for himself? I just find it odd to attack some of our most vocal fighters in this manner.

What exactly did Ed or Keith say that wasn't true?

Calling someone a nutjob for, you know, BEING a nutjob (which all of the REST of the RTRSoF footage exposed in all it's nudity) is pretty much NOT the same damned thing as when a Faux "pundit" barfs hyper-dramatic, red-baiting, end-times hyperbole and Reagan-era stereotypes when describing Democrats.

87. Although it was an attempt to balance both sides, neither Keith or Ed deserved to be tied in
with Fixed News. NOBODY can be compared to FN liars. Everything reported by Keith & Ed can be backed up with facts. We all know this at DU because we're paying close attention every day, but I was annoyed at having to explain to my husband why Keith was inserted into that montage.

I'd like to see Jon fix this mistake in judgment.

89. There are limits to Jon Stewart's sanity bit.
Are we to be neutrally "sane" in the face of war profiteering, of greedy insurance companies, of profiteering charter schools?

I don't think Jon Stewart would suggest that. Olbermann and Grayson are trying to wake people up. They don't lie to us. They are just trying to wake people up.

110. I "lurve" people who fight for the collective cause. It has
nothing to do with celebrity. But you do have a point about the lack of willingness to critique Jon Stewart.

As I stated above, I enjoyed the rally a great deal. I didn't care for the false comparison of left v. right, however. There is no comparison. >>>>>>>>>>> http://pr.thinkprogress.org/2010/10/pr20101028

96. Right. Just watched the whole thing again. I loved the
rally and all that Jon, Stephen, et al. did.

But, Jon doesn't have clean hands in that either. All KO has to do to make his point back to Jon was to take some of the clips which Jon has shown about KO and intermix them with Jon's from his show.

Including the 10 minute "Go F Yourself" back to Beck.

KO, Ed, Rachel, et al are not part of the problem; they are just a minority, left voice in an ocean of propaganda. Much like Jon has to kick it up to make his points.

As a nurse, I can vouch for the accuracy of Grayson's comment that the Republican health care plan is to "Die quickly." I agree with Ed on almost everything, but he's just not demographically attractive to me (reminds me of my dad). Keith, though... (swoon!)

111. Jon may have felt he had to include something from the Left.
Just to get some people on the Right to pay any attention.

I'm sure Jon would not deem publicly calling Geobbels a scoundrel and a POS for what he did, even to the extent of demonization from time to time, the equivalent of Goebbels demonizing Jews and gypsies (or Nancy Pelosi).

113. i agree, it would be one thing to be critical of them
but there is no way they can be compared to the trash on the right.

it's like comparing Code Pink(who i have many critciisms of) to the violent protestors on the right like the guy who stomped on that girl's head.

wasn't jon just recently criticizing obama for not fighting hard enough or some other thing. yet he criticizes those 3 guys.

it seems like Jon is the one who thinks we can easily work with the right wing as longas Dems don't behave like Grayson. talk about naive.

i hate it when people like Jon feel the need to do this to come off as not as partisan.
