Stewart Rally vs Teabaggers in KC - pictures
How very interesting. The tea party planned a rally in a local park today from noon to 2. Meanwhile a local group planned a Rally to Restore Sanity in the SAME PARK. I got both emails last night. I had already committed to canvass today so I got up and out early and was finished in time to get to the competing rallies.

And on the good news front, the Carnahan office was PACKED. Literally standing room only, so many canvassers they had to run back to back training sessions. :woohoo:

First thing I saw when I pulled up to the park was a cop. Then another cop. Both had lights flashing and pulled up on the grass. Didn't look good. I saw a lady walk up to them so I rolled down my window in time to hear her tell them she had called. Traffic then moved and I couldn't hear what else she said.

Found out later this was the woman who had organized the Sanity rally and she had actually paid for a permit. She was asking the cops to tell the tea partiers to leave since they had no permit. She was also collecting donations to recoup her $100 and was giving any extra funds to the local food pantry. :patriot:

The cops were just standing there talking to leaders of both groups. Didn't look like they were going to force anyone to leave but I set about counting the participants on each side before there was a mass exit. It was easy because the tea party folks were gathered in a small (very small) circle off to the side listening to candidates. There were exactly 15 of them. I am including their speaker. The lady who was speaking was hard to hear because the Sanity rally folks were so loud (they were singing) but she was saying she had never run for office before. And I'm thinking well that's obvious because if you knew what you were doing, you would be out knocking on doors today instead of standing here talking to 15 people who probably can't vote for YOU anyway since they don't live in your district.

Then this nicely dressed African American man came up to me and introduced himself. He said he was there because he was tired of hearing there were no black people at tea party events. I said "Well congratulations, I've been to a lot of tea party events here and you are the very first person of color I have ever seen in attendance." He walked away. I couldn't tell if he heard what I said. It was pretty loud.

Then I walked over to the Sanity rally group. I tried counting and stopped at 100. So my unofficial report is

Tea Party = 15

Sanity Rally = 100+

My friend was there serenading the Sanity rally.

Lots of great signs.

10. Trying to get rid of a peaceful group because they didn't pay for a permit bothers me
I understand the need for permits in general, but I wouldn't expect someone on "our" side to be trying to suppress dissent like that. That seems like more of a tea-bagger thing to do. :-/

Love the pictures though :)

14. They aren't really all that peaceful
These are the same characters who regularly invaded our health care rallies last year and our congressman's town halls. They also come to legislative forums and behave rudely. The guys in the Kobach shirts are Minutemen. They like to intimidate and threaten folks.

So I am sure they would have been a problem if the cops had not been there.

Also the lady with the permit had paid $100 for it. Why should one group have to pay and another group use the park for free?
