Early voting big in Iowa

Marta and I mailed our ballots in yesterday. I'm taking my mom to vote on Tuesday. She is 86 and never learned to drive.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Early voting figures show there's tremendous interest in next week's midterm election, Iowa's top elections official said Tuesday.

Secretary of State Michael Mauro said Iowans have requested 345,682 absentee ballots, compared to 242,000 at this point four years ago.

A week before Election Day, 237,348 voters have already cast their ballots — either by absentee ballot or through early voting.

"That indicates to me there's some engagement here," Mauro said.

Mauro credited the gubernatorial race between Democratic Gov. Chet Culver and Republican Terry Branstad, well-known after four previous terms as governor, for raising interest in the election.

"I think early on the pundits were saying there wasn't a lot of engagement," said Mauro. "Certainly we're seeing in the last 40 days the numbers go up."

1. It seems there has been a steady stream in our county court house

since early voting started. I voted last Thur to get it out of the way and in case I get sick again. Plus i can mute the political ads on tv and not yell or make snide comments.

We need to push for a constitutional amendment to outlaw corps $$.
