Wife of Clarence Thomas Calls Anita Hill...(wait for it)...To Demand An Apology
Edited on Tue Oct-19-10 07:48 PM by WilliamPitt
Yeah.

It happened.

Wife of Clarence Thomas calls Anita Hill, seeking apology
By Bryan Bender, Globe Staff

WASHINGTON – Virginia Thomas, wife of Clarence Thomas, left a voice mail for Anita Hill over the weekend seeking an apology from Hill for accusing the future Supreme Court associate justice of sexual harassment during his 1991 confirmations hearings, Hill said in an interview tonight.

Hill is now a professor of the Brandeis University Heller School of Social Policy and Management, in Waltham. She said she alerted campus security because she thought the voice mail was a prank. But she has since learned it was genuine.

"Good morning Anita Hill, it's Ginni Thomas," said the voice mail, according to a transcript of the call Hill read to the Globe. "I just wanted to reach across the airwaves and the years and ask you to consider something. I would love you to consider an apology sometime and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband. So give it some thought and certainly pray about this and come to understand why you did what you did. Okay have a good day."

Hill told the Globe tonight that she has nothing to apologize for and has no intention of retracting her accusation that Thomas made sexually suggestive remarks to her when she worked as his aide at the Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

2. I'm sure Old Slappy told his wife to do it in hopes of getting rid of that
embarrassment (so it doesn't show up in the history books). I think Clarence and Virgina are two wastes of human life and hopefully will end up in the trash bin of history. I know Clarence is nothing but a fucking joke to most people here, but he let our nation get to where it is now by stealing an election for a war criminal. His wife is no better...may they both rot in Hell.

but looking at that photo, he looks all old and worn out. Like all the drugs over the years have eaten away what little brain he has left. Too many weekends partying like a raving animal would be my guess.

56. Not necessarily in the same ring of Hell, however.
The wife remains a really petty offender. Thomas, however, is a sewer of high crimes. Hell is holding a space with his name on it.

26. here the thing Thomas is a lier. I was positive of that BEFORE Anita Hill
As a lifelong news geek, and I am certain I am in good company here at DU, I listed to the Senate hearing before Anita Hill was even discussed. During them Thomas stated that he had never discussed or even given and thought to Roe vs Wade. This is total BS Thomas was in LAW SCHOOL at the time. This was not a little noticed ruling that could have gone unnoticed. I was at the time attending an all boys trade school we discussed Roe vs Wade. That Thomas was in law school and did not do the same can lead to only two conclusions. (1) he is a bald face lier (2) he is less intellectually engaged then W

81. Well....you're the first poster to actually
give a bit of analysis to this situation. (But it's spelled liar, lier, OK?) I'm halfway thru the thread and all I'm reading is 'funny little one liners' that sound like junior high kids, but maybe this is just the age of Twitter and there is no analysis nor thought to WHY.

Why now....after 19 years?

I know this is all a DISTRACTION...I mean after 19 years, why now? I would think this would encourage Blacks to go to the polls.

But maybe it's just Rove and Murdoch having fun ridiculing the women...maybe a little of 'divide and conquer' of the Black and white women? Maybe 'da boyz' just want to make clear to the 'girls' that 'see, we got the power to do whatever we want...and you're just good for play and cleaning up after us.'

For historical purposes let me remind the younger generations of 'The second wife of Clarence Thomas who is white since he divorced the Black wife because she reminded him that he, too, was Black, and benefited from Affirmative Action which he absolutely detests...and since he is soooooooo confused over his racial-ness, he developed rather obtuse sexual perversions with coca-cola cans and those women (Black women only, of course) whom he oversaw at his ironic place of employment....the US Agency which overlooks Equal Employment Opportunity.'

He has also, since becoming a 'Supreme' (if only Diana Ross could take his place), he has become a Catholic and belongs to that church in DC that allows him to be a member of Opus Dei. This man has major psychological problems, IMHO.

I watched those hearings 19 years ago...I had smoke coming from my ears and fire from my mouth. I remember Teddy (of all people) and Biden who just let that turd off the hook. Well...at least the young women of today can see how women were treated....maybe that's the whole point...to remind her of their 'place' and if she gets 'uppity,' it can be brought back to haunt her after some 19 years. (Never forget: Senator Vitter is given a standing ovation when he returns to the Senate floor after having had a prostitute diaper them so he can soil himself and get off sexually).

Anita Hill is a heroine...I hope she dismisses virginia and clarence like the annoying little gnats they are.

virginia can choke on her tea! clarence can go blind on viagra.

>>>> Asked yesterday why she thinks the Thomases are still reliving her testimony, Hill said, “I don’t want to speculate about what is going on in their lives.” <<<<

Professor Anita Hill is a dignified honest woman. I know why she kept quiet as long as she did -- Thomas could have wrecked her career with one phone call. As it was she had every aspect of her character dragged through the mud and the muck and the slime because she was subpoenaed when he was nominated to the highest court in the land, to serve for life.

Ginni Thomas must be in one helluva state of denial to think Anita Hill owes any apologies.

44. one HUGE difference: she was trying to out her own husband's party. they fricking KIDnapped her!
drugged her so she couldn't talk

she still snuck away and called reporters

can't believe they didn't make a movie about her

I think there might have been a retelling of that vignette in some movie....can't remember

here, from a long, fascinating link that ties all this in with the JFK assassination, so be warned if you're not inclined to think Oswald acted alone, haha:

http://www.newsmakingnews.com/mbwhywasmartha.htm

Martha Mitchell made her Washington debut with sarcasm about war protestors who reminded her of "Russian revolutionaries." Three years later Martha wishes those same youths would come to her aid. When president Nixon held a press conference a few days after Ms. Mitchell was taken prisoner she complained that "nobody asked about me."

The youth of America had tried to tell people like Martha Mitchell that the president does not listen to any voices except a few. Why would he care to hear Martha's problems?

There was a smug complacency about the John Mitchell family in the days when he was promising this country that it was "going so far to the right we won't recognize it." Those were the carefree days when John and Martha were not caught in the bending process.

But did John Mitchell, one of the dirtiest, meanest men in political history, expose his "little sweetheart" to espionage agents doing some kinds of dirty work and distasteful acts? At what point did Martha have to be removed, silenced, and totally discredited?

The political princess, who once was cleared for classified materials when she worked with the Army Chemical Corps, was suddenly turned into a negligent, selfish mother who sat idly by while her son's teeth rotted away. From now on Martha gets the Dita Beard treatment with visits from Army doctors and psychiatrists.

Four days after the arrests at the Watergate Hotel, Martha Mitchell called a UPI reporter from Newport, California:

"I am sick and tired of politics."

"I gave (John) an ultimatum I would leave him if he didn't get out."

"I am a political prisoner."

"Politics is nothing but a cops and robbers game."

"I know dirty things."

"I saw dirty things."

"I am not going to stand for all those dirty tricks that go on."

"I am sick and tired of the whole operation."

"They threw me down on the bed, five men, and stuck a needle in my behind. A doctor stitched my fingers after the battle with five guards." (She had bruises on her arms and thighs.)

Martha's telephone conversation was bugged when she summoned the UPI for help from California. Her room was entered, the phone was pulled from the wall, and the silencing treatment began. A security agent from the Committee to Re-elect President Nixon gave Martha an injection in her behind and a doctor was called to stitch up her finger

52. Virginia Thomas is incorrigible, to say the least.
At the time, Anita Hill suffered quite a deal by putting this entire episode in public. Dr. Hill was even demonized afterwards. And Virginia Thomas wants to prolong the suffering by imploring that Dr. Hill apologize?

Dr. Hill should give that woman the finger and go on with her life. She has more class in her pinkie compared to Clarence Thomas' wife.

59. She probably believes her husband....
Ginni Thomas is a serious right-wing Christian activist, not just Clarence's wife. I wasted a few hours of my life once reading up on her activities, amazing that such a person could be the wife of a sitting Supreme Court justice.

My guess here, though, is that she probably believes her lying husband, and therefore she probably believes Anita might be willing to clear the record. It's possible that Anita's reaction will lead Ginni to question Clarence's story, in which case he might finally get what's coming to him (unlikely, I know, still I can dream a little).

I watched the entire confirmation hearings of Justice Long Dong Silver (which he allegedly said to Anita). It makes me absolutely sick that he's on the court, a total creep. He's not even interested in being a justice, either, he hates it. Unbelievable.

69. I also watched the entire hearings. Kept screaming at the TV: "That's DOCTOR Hill, you jerk!!!!"
Drove my poor husband nuts, LOL.

Seriously, when the Senators spoke to Thomas it was Judge Thomas this and Judge Thomas that, but with Professor Anita Hill, PhD, it was Miss Hill, Miss Hill, Miss Hill. Sexist pigs. :grr:

PS: Barbara Boxer was *right* to insist that the General at her hearing call her Senator.

84. starring Arlen Specter
And I never forgot the huge role of Arlen Specter in discrediting Anita Hill, and giving us Justice Long Dong. Made me sick all these years later to watch our Dems welcome Specter into the fold, the new Dems are the old Republicans.

86. Really?
I saw Specter, after the party switch, interviewed about his switch and his views on justices. He didn't seem on board with Democratic judicial perspectives, nor was he at all apologetic for the justices he had supported in his past life as a Republican.

He might support some Democratic positions, but really, putting a D after his name doesn't mean he's on our side. I agree it's very useful for the Democrats to have control of Senate committees, so if he were the 50th Dem it would indeed mean something. As it were, though, he mostly became more fuel to the harmful perception (and reality) that in too many cases there is very little difference between the parties. This rightfully undermines our ability to generate enthusiasm for the Democratic party.

There needs to be a real difference, we need real Democrfats, not just numbers, or we get blamed for the failed corporo-centrist policies that result.

Sorry, I know this argument has been waged a million times on DU, I feel very strongly about it though.

65. The dysfunctional puppetry of the situation would seem to imply Clarence is...
...transferring stress or anger to Virginia or Virginia is witnessing what she feels is Clarence being under undue stress- and that somehow some element of either of those is tied to some lingering gripe or frustration Clarence must not have gotten over with Anita Hill.

Otherwise I can only understand it as a political move or publicity stunt or something- as though Anita Hill was on some sort of short list for next Supreme Court nominee and Virginia wanted to bring the public's attention back on her for the Thomas hearings. But I don't buy that particular explanation, it seems like quite a longshot.

If Virginia is doing kooky shit like this, you can only imagine how fucked up their household has to be.

Justice Thomas, drinking heavily in the evenings and putting on a vintage WW II Japanese Army Officer's uniform with the crotch literally torn out, his naked sex reflecting wildly off the gleaming Japanese saber he stalks-stomps through the house with. When he's got bad spells like this, any living thing under 30 pounds is fair game. Oh god, Virginia thinks, did the last dog make it into the yard?

The next day, after Justice Thomas has left, she takes some tablets with the symbols scratched off and makes the phone call to Hill.

I bet my description is tame compared to the reality of it.

79. The Race Card
(excerpt)

…The daytime drama came to a head when a beleaguered Thomas described the hearings as a "high-tech lynching for uppity blacks." Although race had thus far served as a silent inoculation against critique, here it was deployed openly as a full-strength antibiotic. Thomas sought to link his struggle to sit on the highest Court in the United States to the struggles of African Americans to avoid physical mutilation, torture, and death. He implicitly evoked the experience of blacks such as Emmett Till, a young black man from Chicago who was tortured and killed by whites after teasing a white woman in Mississippi. He compared milquetoast Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee to an angry mob armed with firearms and strong rope.

No one dared openly scoff, but many found the analogy harder to swallow than a diet cola of dubious purity. The irony of the moment was striking, even in this, a political drama that Oscar Wilde could have written: Thomas—a corrosive skeptic of accusations of racism during his tenure at the EEOC—cried racism the moment his nomination was in real jeopardy. When the chips were down and the stakes were high, this staunch defender of color blindness shamelessly played the race card.
