Charleston (WV) Daily Mail endorses Raese over Manchin
http://www.dailymail.com/Opinion/Endorsements/201010181102

What can you expect? In Nov. 2008, this right-wing rag published an editorial demanding that Robert Byrd retire (in the middle of his term! He was re-elected in 2006). :eyes:

1. Disgusting
But not unexpected, considering the source.

2. I figured that Charleston....
...was more liberal, considering it's an urban area.

5. Huntington is an urban area, too, but as a city we're not liberal
unfortunately. Charleston is more liberal than Huntington, but that may not be saying a lot.

On the other hand, this is just how the Daily Mail rolls. It may not reflect anything other than the bias of that particular paper, which has always been right-leaning as far as I know.

8. Have any prominent WV newspapers endorsed Manchin?

9. The Herald-Dispatch has, and so has the Gazette and the Register-Herald in Beckley.

The HD is the only newspaper in Huntington, so that's a major endorsement for here.

edited to add: I called the HD names in another post, but they did get this endorsement right. Thanks Herald-Dispatch. It's true, you only suck 90-95% of the time.

3. Yeah, that's the best you can expect out of the Daily Mail.
The Gazette's more to the left. I pretty much ignore the DM entirely.

But at least Charleston has two papers to choose from. All we have here is the Herald-Disgrace.

6. But, but, but...he's just a businessman who creates jobs!
I'd never even heard of the son of a bitch until this election, and now I hate him with a white hot passion.

7. This sucks....
...I'm really starting to feel we're going to lose this seat. Obama is SO unpopular there and conservatives are so anxious to block the president's agenda, they'll vote for the Republican simply because of that. I don't know if Manchin can totally get out of Obama's shadow right now. Even in his recent TV commercial (where he shoots the cap and trade bill) he says "I'll repeal the BAD PARTS of Obamacare." Okay, but that leaves the door open for him to support most of the law (which is fine with us, but maybe not to the average West Virginian voter).

10. I'm still hopeful that Manchin can pull it off.
But I'm also worried that the race is apparently so close. Even more worrisome is that I know of several people who plan to vote for the Mountain Party candidate because Manchin's stance on mountaintop removal is unacceptable to them. So Joe's getting it from both sides, unfortunately, although the biggest opposition is naturally coming from the Repubs and TP folks.

In the long run, coal has cursed this state, not helped it, and that curse will continue until the coal runs out, or burning coal is made illegal. In other words, we're screwed for the foreseeable future. :(

12. He may, but....
...it's going to take a lot of effort on the part of special interest groups like the NRA and the Chamber of Commerce to encourage otherwise would be-Republican voters to vote for Manchin. Even though these organizations have publicly endorsed Manchin, I have no doubt their primary objective this year is to help Republicans gain a majority in Congress to counter President Obama's agenda.

13. Do you have any idea what percentage of WV is owned
by out of state coal, oil and gas companies or just non-resident millionaires like Raese?

14. I don't have actual numbers on that, no.
But traditionally, that percentage has been pretty high, I believe.

15. I just wondered I have heard it before and it was
very high. It seems like coal companies like Massey and the right wing media pretty make the rules.
