Faces of the Tea Party - Team Cosgray

Kari Huus says:When we arrive, the smell of baking cookies pervades the Cosgrays’ ranch-style home in the countryside outside Monticello, Ind. Outside, it is clear and silent except for their chatter, and the crunch of our footfalls crossing the field covered by cut corn stalks.

The Cosgrays are a close family, knit together by conservative Christian beliefs. They work hard, study hard and live in a place where they have their own water and power supplies, and where they could plausibly be self-sufficient. Their oldest son Alex, 27, farms 20 acres of family land - refusing government subsidies, on principle.

To Sam and Laura Cosgray, massive government spending in the name of averting economic crisis has been an affront to their common sense, and their sense of fairness.

“We bust our backs every day going to work, teaching our children values and working, and that you don’t rely on the government... (you) make it on your own,” says Laura Cosgray, a 47-year-old mother of four. “Then the government has the audacity to come in and take our money... to prop up the banks that are failing because of corruption and greed.”

The Cosgray family on their farm outside of Monticello, Ind. From left, Nicole, 16, Rachel, 20, Laura, Sam, 48, Tyler and his baby, Bella, 4-months-old, Amanda, and her husband, Alex.

low information voters with some time on their hands, apparently.. Perhaps they could be convinced to relinquish some of the farm subsidies they no doubt are getting.. THAT could help with the "deficit" they all care so much about (suddenly).

7. Get the fuck over yourselves.
What, Cosgrays, you think you OWN "hard work and studyin'"? For every story like theirs, there are 10,000+ others that do the same things they do and get nothing but bony fingers for their efforts. I always resented the implication that people aren't financially successful because they don't WORK hard enough.

"massive government spending in the name of averting economic crisis has been an affront to their common sense, and their sense of fairness." I see. But massive government spending on the two wasteful wars and wasteful tax cuts for the wealthy . . .. that's pretty much OK in your books, right? Assholes? Can we stop living under the fairy tale that the National Debt went from $0 to $12 Trillion AFTER January 20th, 2009? Hmmm?

8. There were about 5,000 people at King Richard's Faire a couple weeks ago.
Out of those 5,000 there were six African-Americans (not including the three who worked there as performers).

At Glenn Beck's rally of 87,000 Teabaggers, there were four African-Americans.

Beckapalooza-goers' racism barely out of view -- kinda like the paranoiac bulletproof vest just under Beck's shirt

i have no doubt at all that the teabagger, as a "party" is racist and wildly disproportionately white, but of all the media attention, this seems like an odd choice of links with which to make this point. those crowd shots showing few if any non-whites would work better.

28. I wonder if that is really accurate
The government props up agriculture in this country in ways not immediately visible. If they are supplying corn for ethanol, they are more than likely benefiting from government policy that subsidizes ethanol production and raises the price of corn.

54. They benefit directly from government in many, many ways.
Where did they get that land? If it was inherited, there's a good chance the government gave it to one of their ancestors. Did any of them ever go to school? Do they listen to the radio, get information from the National Weather Service, ever visit a doctor, ever drive on a public road? Do they buy any food from anyone else? Those were all provided FOR THEM BY the government.

What a bunch of whiny assholes.

19. "For the first time in her life, at age 50, she voted and exercised her conservative leanings."

Definitely the "something for nothing" crowd as KO calls them.

Bitch never voted in the 32 years she was eligible and now she wants to talk about how we're "going down a dangerous path", and "heading into a socialistic system here".

The article goes on to say what got her interested in politics was

< article >
the rant by CNBC's Rick Santelli in February 2009 expressing outrage over an Obama administration policy to help distressed homeowners, even if they had bought more house than they could actually afford. The rant went viral on the Internet, where it was embraced by conservatives and derided by liberals as political theater. < / article >

I am thinking it was probably an e-mail forward that put that meme of the "overspending poor" into a racist context.

Because you know all the problems in America are caused by the poor who only have 1% of the wealth and not the top 2% who have the rest :sarcasm:

43. Why would you say that?
There's nothing wrong with white people. I'm white. I'm betting a goodly number of people on this board are white.

The people who need to go away are the mindless numskulls who have been so brainwashed by all the conservative media that they absolutely refuse to believe the truth if it smacked them upside their heads with their (government-run) Social Security check.

I will concede, however, that most of the people in the numskulls category seem to be white, insofar as the Tea Party is concerned.

Look up Cosgray on farm subsidies for Indiana on this site. I suspect they're all connected.
