How the Common Good Is Transforming Our World
Edited on Mon Oct-18-10 04:34 AM by BigBearJohn
In my previous post I wrote about a rising social psychosis that's visible in three areas of our society. It's likely to prevail for some time, but I think it's like a wave that's crested and will crash to the shore. The reason is that the social psychosis is a backlash against a steadily growing consciousness and behavior that refocuses personal lives and public policies towards promoting the common good.

By the "common good" I'm referring to a broad evolution beyond values and actions that serve narrow self-interest, and towards those guided by inclusiveness -- supporting well-being, economic success, security, human rights and stewardship of resources for the benefit of all, rather than just for some.

It's like a stealth operation, because it hasn't become highly visible yet. But polls, surveys and research data reveal several strands of change that are coalescing in this overall direction. I describe each of them below. They may appear to be unrelated, but I think they're driven by an underlying perspective that we're all like organs of the same body, and the body doesn't thrive if any of the organs is neglected or diseased.

It's an awareness of interconnection of all lives on this planet, and a pull towards acting upon that reality in a range of ways. They include rethinking personal relationships, the responsibility of business to society, and the role of government in an interdependent world.

1. From your lips to God's ears
This perspective is a breath of fresh air right about now. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

2. I agree wholeheartedly!
:applause:

In response to the Glenn Becks of the world who have been encouraging that social psychosis full of fear, anger, and selfishness, I look forward to launching the "I Choose" Campaign here at DU in just a few days. I'm getting things ready now. :)

Beck recently dissed Wishadoo on his radio show, as Wishadoo's vision is all about The Common Good.

My response is the I CHOOSE Campaign, which will offer people a clear way to express their worldview, in contrast to the mean-spirited, fear-based worldview others are promoting.

Thanks for the article!

:hi:

3. Are you serious?

Little Gwenn actually took some time off from his Messianic Complex to come back down to earth and discuss Wishadoo?

That is absolutely hilarious!

You must be so proud! If Curly's kid hates it, Wishadoo has to be one of the best things going :)

4. Yes, I am proud!

He was trashing all the endorsing partners of the One Nation Working Together march of 10/2, the Wednesday prior to the march, and he mentioned Wishadoo twice.

I'll give the back story with links -- for those who are brave and want to see how he maligned a variety of groups and individuals -- when I post. He didn't overtly slam Wishadoo, interestingly enough, but insinuated that it's part of the socialist/communist/fascist/nazi plot (isn't everything to him?) because it's described as promoting The Common Good, working towards mutual benefit, etc.

Words that are anathema to the Becks of the world.

I've had his listeners writing me since then, "warning" me that "they're watching Wishadoo" and if they see it's part of "socialism" it's part of "the evil undoing of America."

5. That was my next question

How many wackos have threatened your life>?

Because "helping one another" is the new "Pinko commie" plot to destroy America. We've dropped to 49th in life expectancy of our citizens compared to other industrialized nations, but the ignorant, full-of-hate types don't care as long as no one is helping anyone else.

Rugged individualism and all that rot...

At least you know if they hate it, it's a Good Thing.

8. Fear is isolating, and those folks are obviously afraid of having to live
in a way differing from what they've known all their lives.

Dissed by Beck...You've officially arrived, OGR!
