What is Columbus day?
It is a pro Hispanic holiday celebrating a bunch of people going to a country, refusing to speak the language and taking it over by force. An American a tradition.

1. Christopher Columbus Day Is a Crock
Here are some of the things Columbus did as compiled by Understandingprejudice.org, website established with funding from the National Science Foundation and McGraw-Hill Higher Education.

He was not respectful of other religions: Part of his motivation to leave his native country was to convert the natives to Catholicism since the Jews who refused to convert to Catholicism had been expelled from Spain just months before, a process he lauded in a letter to Ferdinand and Isabella.

He was responsible for slavery: Columbus was not motivated by a desire to explore and learn, he was motivated by greed and by the money to be made int he slave trade to be precise. His slavery beget more slavery because of the desire for sugar and led to the atrocities of the Middle Passage (Taking Africans from their homes forcibly as part of the Atlantic Slave Trade).

...snip...

He "discovered" nothing: There were natives already living in this land and the Vikings had been here before. "Columbus's claim to fame isn't that he got there first," explains historian Martin Dugard, "it's that he stayed."

6. Columbus Day is another opportunity for business to sell crap
At least that is what it has become, just like every other holiday in America. The only ones that have not yet become commercially oriented are the holidays observed by a limited percentage of the population or those whose observers are adamant about refusing commercial exploitation.

Another American tradition!

7. They used to have a nice parade in Boston's North End
back when the North End was Italian.

It's always seemed to be more of an Italian holiday than a Hispanic one. People out here in NM hardly notice it.

8. Somebody posted last night that the Italian American community pushes Columbus
To drum up support the same way the Irish American community does with St. Patrick.

If the main idea is to promote community feeling, that is OK with me. I just wish the communities would select personalities who are not identified with controversy. I expect any significant figure in history will have some controversy attached, though.

9. I could take it or leave it til about 3 years ago.
Listening to Thom Hartmann read journals of Columbus and senior crew members. I was driving and remember asking aloud to no one but the radio..."and we celebrate this crap as a holiday?" The days we dare ask the difference between destiny and damnation.

I rec'd it, the goose egg remained. I don't get the need to hang on to things that transpired so long ago as good things no matter what. I thought we'd come too far to be so immersed in the flat earther mentality.
