Poll question: DU Nation (Geographic Distribution of DU)
Where do you live, DU? (As in right now - not your place of birth). ........ (And before the inevitable gripe about the geographic grouping I placed your state in, I apologize. With 10 choice bars on the poll it's hard to subdivide the country properly.)

21. Likewise
I'd a put VA in the south. And I'd have had just one "plains states" category including TX, and OK in along with the others. That'd a given me a way to have a separate region of AK and HI from the west coast. Other than those quibbles, ya did fine. FWIW, I've been in battles over names before, and they can be real regional. I had to laugh once when a guy from Kansas refered to "New England" when he was clearly refering to the north Atlantic coast from DC to Portland Maine. And his feathers got ruffled when I suggested the "midwest" stopped on the east side of the Mississippi and the rest was the "plains states" until one got to the Rocky Mountain region. But folks bristled when I included Utah in that.

What's real fun (for a true geography geek) is to redraw the state lines based upon modern cultural, political, and economic lines. You'd piss off alot of people if you tried. The names alone would be a battle.

23. Absolutely
Ohio is a good example. The northern tier is 'industrial great lakes' with lots of people descended from late 19th-early 20th century immigrant groups. Southeast/Ohio River Ohio is pretty Appalachian, more in line with Kentucky and West Virginia. A lot of central and Western Ohio is salt-of-the-earth rural types, very midwestern and not much different from plains Indiana or Illinois. These are just trends, not hard and fast rules, but it's interesting to take it all into account. All of this somewhat explains why Ohio is so 'swingy' and such a critical state in Presidential elections.

24. Northeast
TX is a big state, well, because it's a big state. But any rational redrawing of the greater NYC area includes hunks of NJ and probably all of CN. And it becomes the largest population state in the country. Alternately, Buffalo and Rochester are some expanded area of a Pittsburg/Cleveland/Buffalo "state". NVA is split off from the vast majority of the rest of the state, and Maryland and Delaware are merged. So are Vermont and New Hampshire.

38. But wouldn't part of CT be more aligned with Boston?
When I lived in Westchester County, NY. A lot of people I met from eastern CT wanted nothing to do with New York.

39. Except thteir jobs
Economically, it's more connected to NYC. Culturally, it's closer to Boston, mostly because Boston "wasn't NYC". IF those folks wanted to live in NYC, they would.

Connecticut is split down the middle, roughly at the Connecticut River. I live 15 minutes from RI, and if you start cheering the Yankees in a bar, you'll soon be visiting our wonderful hospitals. Seriously.

This side of Connecticut is rural and very New England in style. As for Jobs, many folks work in Hartford or in the shipbuilding/pharma industries along the coast.

70. Agreed.
I grew up north of Hartford, about ten minutes from the Mass boarder. The CT river goes right through the town I grew up in. I would say that area is much more aligned with Boston than NYC.

94. It's old data but...
A good 15 years ago I saw some data that indicated that the bulk of income (which is of course concentrated in a minority of people) in Conneticut emminated from NYC. The devil would be in the details of course, but it was an article about the larger issue of "When NYC sneezes, CT gets a fever" kind of analysis. I think culturally there is not doubt about the "New England" character of CT. And a large part of that apparently is rooted in the reality that it is where alot of people go because they DON'T want to live in NYC.

Where I live in CT we are much more aligned with Boston, which is just an hour drive away.

CT has such a reputation for being a rich, snooty bedroom state for NYC...whole different world on my side of the state.

80. I was kinda surprised
I thought Kansas, etc. was over-represented. But I get 45.7 million for the California region, 50.9 million for the Great Lakes, 14.5 million for the Kansas region and 30.7 million for Texas. So 20 Ks-Mo vs. 92 West Coasters. Should be 60 west coasters or 30 Kansans. And Texas types are even more under-represented. Of course, it might be more accurate to compare regions by number of Kerry voters instead of all people.

But probably not for too much longer. I'm finishing up my PhD in May. Then who knows where the adventure will take me!

With that special laid back arrogance and elitism that we have cultivated for so very long.

It's ok that you live elsewhere, it's just kinda sad. LOL!

105. One in a million? Better than that.
As an former and unreconstructed demographer I couldn't help but notice that each reply in this poll represents about 550,000 in the population -very roughly speaking the same size as a congressional district.

It shouldn't be too much of a surprise that groups 1, 7, and 8 are represented noticeably higher than the mean, and groups 3 and 4 noticeably less.

116. I live in....
Texas but I didn't park my brains. This could be a better state if and when it gets a 2 party system that has to respond to all its citizens.
From my experience there are a lot of Northerners here who lean Democratic and liberal. Texas is just the last place we have as an address not our state of mind.
