In Grayson Flap, Factcheck.org Misses Webster Ties To Christian Reconstructionism

So how close is Republican Congressional candidate Daniel Webster, running against Democratic Representative Alan Grayson for Florida's 8th Congressional District, to evangelist Bill Gothard? That question is now politically salient because of Gothard's participation in a radical Christian political movement called Christian Reconstructionism that seeks to impose stoning as a form of capital punishment for crimes including murder, adultery, "heresy," and "witchcraft." As a February 16, 1997 story in the St. Petersburg Times described,

"Last summer, Daniel Webster journeyed to South Korea on a religious mission, meeting with the country's president and other political and spiritual leaders. He was joined by Bill Gothard, the head of a $30-million Christian evangelical group. Four months after the trip, Webster ascended to one of the most powerful positions in Florida: speaker of the state House of Representatives. He brings with him 14 years of experience with Gothard's Institute in Basic Life Principles, where Webster has not only attended seminars, but also taught classes and even made an instructional video that raised money for the institute."

The Biblically approved methods of execution include burning (at the stake for example), stoning, hanging, and "the sword." Gary North, the self-described economist of Reconstructionism, prefers stoning because, among other things, stones are cheap, plentiful, and convenient. Punishments for non-capital crimes generally involve whipping, restitution in the form of indentured servitude, or slavery. Prisons would likely be only temporary holding tanks, prior to imposition of the actual sentence.

7. This is important.

Some of us have been raising the alarm about so much religion in government. If we do not fight it, these types of punishments could start to make their way into our law books. All it would take is a few well placed judges and legislators and it could happen. They don't call groups with those types of nefarious goals "the invisible empire" for nothing. You won't know what hit you until they start enacting legislation or overturning previous definitions of "cruel and unusual" punishment.

This is important.

9. For folks paying attention

In all the hoo-ha about Grayson's ad about Taliban Dan, astute observers may have noticed that while Webster waxed wroth about Grayson's "selective editing" of his remarks, Webster never did quite get around to denying that he believed wives should submit to their husbands. The whole kerfufffle was that in talking to the men, Webster wanted them to focus on their manly duties, and worry less about how their chattel behaved.

I wonder why nobody in the librul media has bothered to ask Taliban Dan about his views toward the proper role and behavior of married women?

Reconstructionists want what the Taliban have. The only difference is they, thankfully, are not willing to wage war to get it. Instead they wage politics and wait for the day they have enough believers in power to make it US law. When any politician says they want US law based on biblical law I recoil knowing they want to go old testament on everyone they dislike and not extend the kindness and compassion described in the new.
