Medical marijuana workers at Marjyn Investments LLC in Oakland, California voted to ratify their first union contract with Teamsters Local 70.

Thirty-eight of Marjyn’s workers—including trimmers, gardeners and cloners who specialize in cloning strains of marijuana—joined the union under a two-year contract.

Marjyn Investments provides medical marijuana used by patients suffering from cancer, HIV and other life-threatening illnesses.

“The company expects to expand and hopes to have about 150 employees,” said Lou Marchetti, business agent for Local 70. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever organize medical marijuana providers, but this is an expanding industry in California.”

The workers approached Teamsters a year ago, said Rome Aloise, a regional Teamsters president. The process of becoming unionized was “accomplished very quickly.”

1. Wow, this will certainly shake up the industry.

Trimming is a tough job if done by hand, and usually paid at minimum wage to college kids. There might be problems if the trimmers demand the same pay as growers.

IMO the growers should make the bulk of the profit. Right now the middle-men make the most money in MMJ industry. That's wrong.
