Is Something Happening? - Repubs dropping in Polls?
Edited on Tue Sep-21-10 02:44 PM by RamboLiberal
Caveats, caveats, caveats. But is something happening for the Democrats in the national generic ballot?

Nate Silver says that the congressional generic may be understating the Democrats' strength. But it's starting to look like that number itself may be shifting. Over the last week, five polling organizations have come out showing the Democrats 1 point ahead of the Republicans. Those are Reuters/Ipsos, Gallup, Zogby, Yougov and PPP. And as you can see from the chart below, it's actually more of a Republican drop than the Democrats rising, though it's a bit of both. And that suggests that it's not just a matter of Dems coming home as the election heats up.

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2010/09/is_something_happening.php#more?ref=fpblg

Both the Real Clear Politics Congressional Generic average and the new Gallup track show similar national trend lines - Dems gaining ground, GOP dropping. Similarly, the Gallup track has Obama's approval rating improving by 10 net percentage points in the past month, from 42/51 to 47/46 (RCP has shown movement despite 2 clear outlier Rasmussen and AP polls).

If these trend lines are true, no one should be suprised. The underlining favorability of the Republican Party is still far below that of the Dems and Obama. This election has never been like 1994 where at this point there had been both a fall of the Dems and a rise in the GOP. The memory of the disasterous GOP reign in the last decade is still too fresh, their leaders still to unreformed, their candidates far too wacky, and their ideas still to reckless for the current GOP to have fully taken advantage of the Democratic underpeformance this past cycle. This election, like all elections, is not like any other election. It has its own contours, its own set of dynamics. Like all elections it is sui generis.

As NDN has been arguing for most of 2010, the real questions in the election were 1) could the Democrats get their huge base to come home and vote 2) could the Dems do a better job at engaging on the main issue of the election, the economy, and better define the GOP as a reckless party? The late movement in this election, despite the truly silly "baked in the cake" arguments we've heard on TV of late, was always likely to be towards the Democrats. This current Congress had done too much right for the summer perceptions of Democratic performance to continue to be as bad as it was. And the underlying strength of the Democratic and Obama brands were just too great for their standing not to improve with some focused recalibration, which has happened now. We dont really now exactly why these things have happened, but I for one believe its because the President has begun to make the choice on the economy much more clear.

http://ndn.org/blog/2010/09/poll-watch-hope-dems

Focus less on the narrow Democratic lead (throw in Rasmussen, and that evaporates), but the trends. Those are not good trends for the GOP, and shows that whatever their flaws, Democrats are closing strong.

And while the GOP couldn't stop releasing internal poll numbers all spring and summer (with nary a Democratic response), suddenly the roles are reversed -- it's the Democrats who are dumping scads of great-looking internal polling, while Republicans have gone suspiciously silent.

It's telling that House Republicans are suddenly scrambling to release their "plan" for America. They showed little interest in campaigning on any agenda while they rode high on the polls. It was all "Pelosi Obama Pelosi Obama bugga bugga bugga", all the time. But the wind seems to be out of those sails, the enthusiasm gap appears to be narrowing, and the GOP's big generic ballot lead is starting to erode. That's why they're releasing their plan -- to try and stem the bleeding.

Make no mistake -- the GOP will make significant gains this November. I'm not trying to create false hope or wear blinders. But if we hold the House and Senate, at the cost of a few dozen Blue Dogs, it won't just be a victory for us, but it'll sunder the GOP. They expect to win both chambers. If we stop them, the simmering battle between the teabaggers and GOP establishment will be epic.

97. I just saw ...
Terry McCauliffe on Slannity agreeing with him on every damn thing and keeping the tax cuts for the rich.

He was using the rightwing talking points about businesses and how they are unsure because they want some more tax cuts.

We need to push all of these Bluedog/republicons (really)to spell out exactly what they are for,and show them if they think we are going to lose that we can make sure they lose too, because if that truly were the case, we wouldn't have nothing to lose if we are suppose to be losing anyway. Which I don't believe...Ben Nelson and the rest should be the targets.

83. Indeed
I think no matter how we do the usual suspects will spin this as a vindication of the DLC/Blue Dog faction.

Still, at least we aren't the repukes. Nothing they do is going to make this election good news for them. After a rachet up by fox news and a year and a half of anger incitement and wild crazed bullshit they will not take either the house or senate. They will have lost the expectation game and they will turn on the tea-party and claim that they are to blame. Alternately the teabaggers might turn a coup on the "establishment republicans" (a phrase which is only oxymoronic if you assume the tea party pukes are somehow anti-establishment) and stage a takeover for right wing xenophobic lunatic fringe.

Of course this is where things get kind of dicey. What will happen if the national republican party leaps even further to the right wing? Despite being completely disempowered, they could still be a bit scary and it seems there is no position too right wing for the fox news crowd.

19. Probably because the "enthusiasm gap" was not real to start with ...
Here's the deal ... the GOP/Fox News is doing everything it can to make the Tea Party nuts crazy 24/7. And so, when you ask all people if they are excited about an election in 10 months, the WHACK JOBS scream yes ... most Americans, with a LIFE, yawn. The election is too far away. But pollsters keep asking day after day ... and the right wing crazies scream, and regular Americans yawn.

But now the election is 2 months away. Regular Americans are returning from summer vacation. They are starting to pay attention. And surprise, surprise, the GOP is not holding up so well now.

I really hope that the left sees the opportunity that it has here. If we really show up and keep the Dems in office, the GOP infighting will explode.

at least Sen Kay Hagan did vote for cloture and I think she would vote yes. I hope so anyway.

I will go vote for D, I could not get to the primaries, but then again the choices were so so, not, bad not great. I can support Dick Burrs challenger Elaine Marshall.

I have health stuff going on all the time, any given day can be a bedrest day, that and not having my own transport keeps me from going out and picketing or protesting.

I hope the teapot explodes, lots of infighting, back biting, baiting and maybe their penchant for going armed might wake up the moderates....

66. 2002 is not a good time frame to compare ...
It was a year after 9-11, and those scumbags were more than willing to use it to their political advantage - every democrat in the country was painted as a weak kneed terrorist loving pukebag, see Max Cleeland ...

Honestly, Bush's second term and the Rs holding congress until 06 are due mostly to their use of 9-11 politically ...

I think moving foward any comparison to what was going on from an election standpoint during that time frame has to be adjusted for that factor ...

People are associating Repubs with the Tea Party and with good reason. They're an extreme element or their own party no matter how much they might want to disavow them now that the monster they created has turned on them. And people seeing headcases like O'Donnell, Angle, and Paul see the face of the Republican Party. Smooth move, Rethugs. Your servant became your master, asswipes.

Edited on Tue Sep-21-10 03:11 PM by Qutzupalotl
the extreme nutbagginess of candidates like O'Donnell is getting lots of play. Truly, I think O'Donnell by herself is responsible for about 5 percent of the Republican's loss in the generic. What that means is that there's still enthusiasm out there for the R's, but O'Donnell and Angle are making it look like it's evaporating. So we'll have to look at individual races and focus on the ones where we have a shot.

More good news is that Obama is coming off in public as his reasonable, decent self, which destroys the Kenyan/Muslim terrorist BS and makes those who promote that crap suspect. Obama and the Democrats have appeal to the middle. The challenge is the economy; a last-minute surge in employment would be a big help, but I'm not holding my breath.

Seriously, it took you this long to notice the democratic bounce? I pay attention to the polls as many people in the media say they do to, but for some strange reason over the past 3 weeks or so the media has been silent on the polling data and trend lines. It also happens to be true that over the past 3 weeks the dems have surged in every available category. The congressional ballot, the enthusiasm gap, Obamas approval numbers, and various polls all show a clear democratic bounce. I have literally been saying this for weeks and its nice that the media is finally catching on.

22. Do not lower your guard, in fact gear up to fight harder---Me
thinks Dems just may have been granted a chance to get in their
and pull it off.

Here is some stuff to consider. J.Klein has been on a Roadtrip
cross America. Reporting back to MSNBC this week, he has not
seen a Republican Wave in various places he is visiting. He
is talking about from Pa to Wisconsin just visiting with everyday
Americans on the ground so to speak.

For the Americans who watch TV and follow the news closely,
my gut has been telling me the Repubs have over-reached.
The Tea Party is often coming across as a bunch of bullies.

In last 2 or 3 primaries in different states, ie Alaska, Delaware
there have been serious complaints coming out of the primaries.
The natives (people who live and vote in the state) have bitterly
complained about the last minute (72 hour surge)inundation
with people from out of state (TeaParty Express has been named)/
The Delaware govenor described it as outside groups coming in
and big footing our citizens. Does anyone remember the Fla
recount and the Bus Load of Republicans acting like thugns
slamming and pushing their way into the Counting Area????
This is what it sounds like. (BTW, the Freepers were part
of that.)

There is enthusiasm but intimidation and big footing ain't
always appreciated.

BTW, today the TEA PARTY PATRIOTS, a specific group of Tea Party,
just received ONE MILLION DOLLARS from an Anonymous Donor. For
coordinators--not for candidates (???)

I think the candidates and what they stand for are making
people think twice.

33. Just because
Just because the smallest demographic of voters, the Pyschotic Right, is loud at the moment, doesn't mean that they represent the entire population. In fact they can waive their dicks in the air all they want, but they are still only 30% of the population, so fuck em.

36. Don't let good poll results lull you into feeling complacent
We need to keep our energy up, keep our advocacy going, keep hammering away at the failure of trickle down and all the other idiotic and dangerous Republican/conservative ideas.

Besides, there are dozens of polls that are going to come out between now and election day.

37. Polls tighten up as elections draw nearer
beyond that I don't see any real take home message.

We'll see in a month or so whether the Democrats' narrative (which seems to be that "we're nor perfect but Republicans are worse") has been persuasive enough to prevent a House Speaker Bohner.

43. Won't these people just STFU
I am so friggin' fed up with Nate Silver this and Nate Silver that. Every time he opens his mouth, he's treated like Alan Greenspan was treated as chairman of the Fed. Everyone hangs on his every word, and then the pundits react. He himself says one thing one day and another thing the next based on this or that sliver of info. And yet there we all are, hanging on his pronouncements. What a crock of shit.

Look, I don't know what's going to happen. My guess is that democrats will vote for democrats, republicans will vote for republicans, and the crazies will vote for the crazies. I will go out on a limb here and suggest that democrats will not stay away from the polls and will not under any circumstances vote for anyone on the right. As I told a republican pollster a few weeks ago, I'd rather cut off a limb than vote for a republican. Republicans who can't vote for the tea party crazies will stay away, but otherwise are unlikely to shift to the left. We are simply too polarized to consider anything else.

47. I think the Repubs have marginalized themselves...
to the lunatic right fringe, the Dems have positioned themselves to the right of traditional Democratic principles, and sooner or later there will be a new party forming on the left to take the place of the now-fossilized Dems. Yes, sooner or later enough voters will see the corruption and the all-out catering to moneyed interests by so many elected Dems, and they will want to go to a party that appears honest and truly in tune with their needs. The Dem Party has become the New Republican Party, IMO.

63. I think the current Dems just
need to get the republican party out of the way so they can be themselves. As long as the republican party stills lives, there is always political pressure to please Right and Left constituents. But if the people show they totally reject the Republican party by destroying it, I think current Dems will feel more comfortable being more public and loyal to their more Left positions.

81. Obama's presence in the last couple of months has been decisive, IMHO
He comes across as assured, charismatic and downright charming. It helps that his family is freakin' adorable. No, as everyone knows, I am a Hillary supporter and I had and still have problems with Obama; but, I see very straight and I believe the change is because of Obama's attention to "detail". Good strategy to put your best foot forward, and he's the best foot we got right now. We must keep dems in power as the alternative is plain nuts. Obviously, all of us know that Obama can do better, and let's hope he does, but, in the meantime, get out the vote. Shout it loudly and often that we have too much to lose.

60. Obama..
... has been pounding on the Repubs lately, as he SHOULD have been starting his first day in office.

I know there are many reasons for the new poll numbers but I have to think that having the president of the US call them out on their bullshit, especially economics - where after 8 years of profligate spending and reckless deregulation they find religion just in time to cut unemployment benefits, it hitting home.

As unhappy as I am with Obama, and I am DAMNED unhappy, the Republicans would be even worse as hard to imagine as that is.

For one thing, it could be that the pubbies peaked too early and got caught on the wrong side of the pendulum-swing.
For another, it's becoming very evident that the Tea Party is built on lunacy and inchoate rage. These are not attractive qualities in a leader.

75. Consider Also
That this period overlaps very heavy spending by outside groups supporting Republican candidates. Incredibly, this election cycle has seen almost as much spending as the entire 2008 election cycle. This will be the first time ever that a non-presidential election will surpass the prior presidential election in spending, thanks to Citizens United and the reminder that the Supreme Court counts in elections like this.
