I have offered to put people up if I can get a big enough place... still working on that. I am up for anything that weekend; I want there to be hundreds of thousands of people and I want the energy to last until after the elections and then still continue and continue.

I emailed the place we met in Jan of 07.

The march the next day was wonderful. But the meetup the night before the march was the best. :)

I emailed them for info on reserving a room. If there'a a high cost involved, I will obviously look elsewhere. But it's a great place and was the perfect setting for our meetup.

9. I'm trying.
There don't seem to be any buses leaving from Florida. I've been in contact with those on the steering committee for the south area and for Florida. So far they have not been able to give me any information on transportation options. I've taken the day Friday before off of work and hope to have some way to find some way to DC.

You can put your financial needs on this site

http://www.wishadoo.org

and then everyone can chip in $5 or whatever. There are MANY people who would like to go but cannot, but would be happy to help support another in going....seriously. If you try it and it works, perhaps more will join you and the DU meetup will grow(as well as the protest)

37. I can't go to DC, but I may be able to go to the matching event in my state.
It's a 3-4 hour drive over the mountains. I'll know by October 1st, when I get my first paycheck since last June.

They cut our pay by almost 6%, and cut 11 days off the calendar. Those cuts take effect on the first paycheck for this school year. In addition, our health insurance is going up 30%; the final numbers came in this week. That takes effect on that check, too.

I've already gone through my safety cushion dealing with the 3 previous cuts. I don't even know how much the October paycheck is going to be. If there is enough room for fuel for a long driving trip, I'll be there.

40. I get paid.
We get one check on the last work day of the school year to cover the summer months.

That check was short, because our district cut days off the end of the school year. Those cuts were made when we were only a few weeks away from the end of the year, so weren't spread over a whole year. Those cut days came out of the summer check, leaving us suddenly with less money for the summer than we thought.

Five years ago, I sank all my savings and every drop of credit into the efforts to remove my grandson from his mother's custody and provide him with the life-saving open-heart surgery, and three years of subsequent support and therapy, he needed. His dad, my son, couldn't work during the recovery time, as the grandson needed a full-time family caretaker. By the time they (my son and grandson) were on their feet and on their own, I had no reserves left. The pay cuts started coming the same year they moved out. I'm hanging on by a thread.

A district here in my area pays that way as well. It sucks. You have more taxes taken out because the gross pay is higher.

Hope your grandson is doing well now. :)

42. The grandson is thriving, which makes it all worth it.
It's also about lifestyle, of course. If I were willing to quit supporting my 3 hayburners out in the barn, or to move to town, my budget would be easier. Those hayburners, though, are the last in a line of horses that have been in my family since 1945. They're here for the duration.

In reality, I'd originally planned to sell this place and downsize when the son and grandson moved out; I took on a bigger place, and a higher mortgage, so we'd all fit in one place. By the time they moved, the housing debacle left me upside down. Not hopelessly, but it'll be some years before I can reasonably move on.

49. I get paid for the summer
at the end of the year, but in 5 pays, without the deductibles, so it's actually more, but goes much quicker, this is the first year that I've money left which is good because we're only getting two half pay checks this month...another story.

by the way, consider this a K&R and I'll be there...

48. The website shows a bus departing from Long Beach
That was when I checked a couple days ago. I plan to keep checking back to see if they have one closer to me (I'm in the Antelope Valley).

I could fly, but the bus is appealing for the chance to meet and spend time with others heading out for the march, though it means a much bigger time investment.

I still don't know what I'll wind up doing, but I'm getting more and more fired up about the idea of going.

'I still don't know what I'll wind up doing, but I'm getting more and more fired up about the idea of going.'

I believe I saw the entry (you're referring to) but it appeared to be one person, from Long Beach, looking for a bus, as we are. I'll have to take another look.

Riding the bus with another DUer would be fun.

50. Before you go, read this!
the real reasons to go:

http://www.blackagendareport.com/?q=content/let%E2%80%99s-have-real-protest-not-democratic-pep-rally-october-2nd

excerpt here:

“The character and importance of the ‘One Nation’ rally will be determined by the demands that are made on Power, most especially on the White House.”

The October 2 rally in Washington to demand jobs and “stop moving money out of education and into wars and prisons," in the words of NAACP president Ben Jealous, promises to be huge. SEIU Local 1199, a co-initiator of the event along with the NAACP, has booked 500 busses from New York City, alone, and thousands more will be rolling into the nation’s capital from around the country. Participating organizations include nearly the entire spectrum of labor, social justice and peace formations in the United States.

But big does not necessarily mean historic, or even useful. The character and importance of the “One Nation” rally will be determined by the demands that are made on Power, most especially on the White House, where one man wields the power of an entire branch of government, is the leader of the majority party in both Houses of Congress, and commands national and global attention by virtue of the presidential “bully pulpit.” A Washington rally for jobs, justice and peace that makes no specific demands on President Obama would amount to a capitulation to the status quo on all counts, no matter if half a million attended. And if the event is allowed to become wholly a pep rally for Obama and Democrats, then that will tell the world that real movements for laboring people, social justice and peace do not currently exist in the United States – just a bunch of Democratic Party groupies with delusions of relevance to the burning issues of the day."

77. I'm coming to the March...
....I'll be on Amtrak all of Friday night, into DC about 7:30 am. Probably walk around the mall until the 12:00 kick-off.

Was there any decision on which day to have a DU get-together? BTW, sorry I missed this thread earlier. I posted basically the same question yesterday and had few responses. I'm feeling better about our participation now.

100. Union Bus to One Nation
Do you have any info to share on that union bus? Are there any available seats? Can non-members ride?

98. TEXAS TEXAS TEXAS
For Texans there is another option. A person not far from me is arranging a bus. I spoke to him on the phone yesterday and he still has plenty of spots available on a big coach bus. The bus departs Burleson, TX, just south of Ft Worth, on Sept 30. Hotel is available for Saturday. Return trip departs DC Sunday morning and arrives back in Texas on Monday. Single person: $321. Double occupancy: $275 per person. This includes bus and room.

If you are in Texas and are interested in this, please PM me ASAP.

99. Texas bus to One Nation
****************************

UPDATE BURLESON/FORT WORTH

We are now taking reservations for a bus trip to the D.C. rally and will be making it in a all day/night ride with no layovers until we get to D.C..

Spend Saturday night in D.C. and return Sunday morning and arrive Fort Worth Monday morning.

These changes were made to accomodate more people who could not get off from work and also to keep the costs in line.

I am striving to keep the cost per person not to exceed $275.00.

For those that have already signed up and now cannot attend because of the changes please advise me.
