| Obama mocks liberals during $30,000/plate dinner. Laughter ensues |
|
Edited on Fri Sep-17-10 05:06 PM by DrSteveB
Democrats, just congenitally, tend to get -- to see the glass as half empty. (Laughter.) If we get an historic health care bill passed -- oh, well, the public option wasn't there. If you get the financial reform bill passed -- then, well, I don't know about this particular derivatives rule, I'm not sure that I'm satisfied with that. And gosh, we haven't yet brought about world peace and -- (laughter.) I thought that was going to happen quicker. (Laughter.) You know who you are. (Laughter.) We have had the most productive, progressive legislative session in at least a generation. Glenn Greenwald responds: http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/... *note: He clearly did not mean "Democrats" as a whole, as Centrist Democrats support HCR, etc, coupled with the "You know who you are" hint.

He never attended an American public school and his children have never attended an American public school.
One can't know what one can't know. From personal experience, Obama knows *nothing*.
Therefore, he relies on the expertise of the braintrust... preppies all... to advise him on pubic ed policy.
"Reform" sounds like a good policy to have.... despite the fact that, as practiced, it is in fact the OPPOSITE of real reform.
Obama's interest in this area, alas , does not , extend beyond the superficial and the political. (See sentence #1)

A little context would be nice--but cynicism is so much easier when taking quotes out of context, no? My guess is that this comes from one of those humorous little speeches that presidents are obligated to provide at public events. So I'm with you. Let's find the video!

Feingold was right, and it's not just teabaggers. Q. What explains the difficult political climate for Democrats, considering that President Obama has implemented many policies he campaigned on?
A.“There are two primary reasons. One is the economy. Human nature is such that people are going to say, ‘I’m frustrated.’ That creates an environment that whoever is in office, whoever is doing anything, is potentially vulnerable to people being unhappy. There’s a second factor that’s more cynical. A conscious decision was made by certain groups to destroy this presidency the minute it started. People say it was the health care bill – no, it wasn’t. I go to every county every year and hold a town meeting. Within days of the president being sworn in, I had people showing up at my town meeting with hats on, with tea bags coming out, saying this is going to be socialism.”
<...>
Q.Has the president squandered any opportunities?
A.“I don’t look at it that way. What I look at is there are so many challenges at once, there are so many things you can do. The most important things –- we’re getting at the job situation and the recovery. There’s a lot of blood given on that. This health care thing was a courageous and important thing to do, but it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever seen a president do. The one thing I think he did squander an opportunity was the mistake of what he did with Afghanistan. It was a very bad decision. He should not have doubled down on Afghanistan. That is going to hurt him more than these other things.”

I've said it before -- if we lose Congress this November and/or the White House in 2012, the fault goes as much on never-satisfied progressives, who started screaming "betrayal!" whenever Obama did something that wasn't 100% what they demanded, practically from the moment he took office, as it does on our opponents on the right. We seem to have forgotten (if we ever learned in the first place) that politics is a process of trying to gain as much ground as possible, and, if something isn't fully attainable right away, we take what is possible for now and keep pressing for more thereafter. Instead, the attitude among many here seems to be "if we aren't handed everything on a silver platter instantly, turn on our own side's leaders without mercy." Utterly immature -- while our leaders have been taking non-stop flak from the right, they've been getting little but screams of "traitor!" and "sellout!" from too many on the left as well. We need to learn one thing from the right -- when in power, defend our own to the death, even as we are pressing for more. That's how they've dominated politics for the past thirty-odd years...and why, every time we gain power, it seems we give it up at the first midterm. (I wonder whatever happened to the "election season" rule around here that circular-firing-squad threads were not to be allowed?)

You're right on all counts, although I dispute that the "never-satisfied" are true progressives. Many of them are bitter PUMAs like Jane Hamsher who have decided to constantly attack President Obama from the left even though they were devotees of DLC darling Hillary because they will never ever forgive Barack Obama for winning it all. The rest are GOP trolls like the ones DKos have uncovered recently.
I am a liberal and as all polls have shown since he became POTUS, a very large majority of self-described liberals have consistently approved of Pres. Obama.

not the progressives or liberalism so find another whipping post... you aren't helping the party, that's for sure, not with dishonestly blaming progressives. Question is now, why did you decide to do so? Was it flame bait. I hope so... because my reply doesn't break any rules.
One reason I came around to being a liberal is because they were the only ones who have the intestinal fortitude to be honest with themselves and others even if their path was harder, a bigger challenge in order to make an end. That I honor and respect. I think I made myself clear. Good night.

many of us put in 25- 30 hrs a week phone banking (5-10 p.m. every night) after working 40 hrs to pay the bills, spent our days off registering voters and going door to door. Not to mention donating every payday. We than voted early so we could drive others to the polls. This snark is old. I will vote D because I know the alternative is crazy but that is all I intend to give.

How much farther out of touch can these rich people get from the majority of workers making under 50,000 a year, most well under if they are lucky enough to have a job. No public option, I hope he is ready for the flood of increasing multiples of tens of millions of poor people who will qualify for medicaid. Should be a laugh riot.
The perpetually comfortable upper middle class better have a rather large funny bone, they'll be paying for it.

$30,000 a head fundraiser??? Just who do they think those of us who are struggling to make half that a year are going to vote for. It doesn't get much clearer who they represent than shameless open bribery. The lesser of two evils has been a political strategy for both parties for decades but someone better tell the totally out of touch elite in Washington that the party is just about over.
You can only get away with the gluttony and hoarding when there is a semblance of a large middle class. They've taken down their cover and now millions more former middle and lower middle class people don't have any wealth and face a life of slave wages. This coming year their numbers should increase by tens of millions again.
When you are destitute or close to it your bullshit meter goes on high alert. This kind of pandering to the criminals who brought this country and it's people down in the last three decades is political suicide.

Really bad move by Obama that shows he doesn't understand the criticism he is receiving. He does the same thing as Gibbs and jokes about us being mad about ridiculous things like "not achieving world peace" and just shrugs off legitimate criticism of bad policies which he has adopted, not just failed to correct quickly enough.

Folks are supposed to be pissed about the fact that the President mentioned it? I'm pissed at the fact that *some* Democrats are always complaining that whatever is done ain't nothing, and certainly not good enough to do more than keep them complaining about how they are being criticized, while they continueously criticize. Yeah-- we have our own whiny, self-important group of assholes who insist they, and only they, have the way to get things done around here and it's just too bad everyone else in the world is too lazy and stupid to see it their way.
Well, it's a big, bad, complicated world out there and if you can't deal with getting only half your loaf, just get out of the way and let the rest of us get something done. It won't be perfect, but it will be a little better than what we'll get from Speaker Boehner.
The taste of sour grapes from a lot of people don't have 30 grand to splurge at a fundraiser is so prevalent it's wandering over here and making my dinner taste funny. How the fuck do you think money is really raised?

Much?
Greenwald's attempt to sow division with his lame spin is only going to appeal to those who really aren't interested in what the President says or does. They aren't interested in his actual record. Anyone who sees the President's policies as failures or as a throwback to Bush aren't interested in looking at what has been achieved.
People like Rachel Maddow, Paul Krugman and many elected progressive Democrats see the progress. Sure they complain, but they also recognize significant progress when they see it.

He was talking to people who had $30,000 to buy a seat. Is that more clear?

you're suddenly for bipartisanship with Norquist or are you against it only when it involves the President's commission?
Also, the President isn't running the commission, albeit set up by him. Any invitations are via the commission chairs.

What's "funny" is you don't even bother to check your facts before making assertions. Here are the facts: http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=Nor...

You must be right. No commission appointed by the Executive is beholden to the Executive.

They disagree 99% of the time. They joined forces in order to call for an investigation of Rahm the-auto-union-hater Emanuel. They were allies in one letter they signed together. But I understand that exaggeration is a favorite strategy of people who dislike liberals.
I bet you won't type the number of policies in which Hamsher and Norquist disagree.

.... you agree the OP. On any given day, I can as easily agree as disagree with any one of the posters here. When I see who replies and who agrees or disagrees en mass, the less necessary it is to even read the OP.
