Military budgets should be cut

Draconian cuts to the military are needed.
Close most foreign bases.
Bring our troops home.
Put them to work rebuilding America instead of protecting corporate interests overseas.

Otherwise we go the way of the old Soviet Union.

All they are trained for is to kill.

2. Well, the military does have a few things going for it -

they are at least average intelligence, physically fit, well disciplined - an advantage to any workforce. Re-training is possible, and the military actually teaches its members HOW to learn.

If we had a million intelligent, fit, well-trained workers building and re-building our infrastructure, as CCC workers and WPA workers did in the 30s, we could have thousands of bridges and roads repaired, high speed rail laid down across the country, a smart electric grid in place, all within five years. We could even pay prevailing wages for the work, rather than military wages, and still save money because a bulldozer is a damn sight cheaper than a tank, and dump trucks won't need constant replacing for being blown up by IEDs.
