Special Advisor? Is Warren getting the nod or not? UPDATE:
Edited on Wed Sep-15-10 06:25 PM by laughingliberal
Banner on CNN:

Obama to name Elizabeth Warren to advisory position to avoid confirmation battle over heading consumer protection agency.

Sounds like she didn't get the job.

UPDATE:

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/obama-picks-elizabeth-warren-help-form-consumer-agency/story?id=11624929

President Obama will select Elizabeth Warren to join the administration in a special advisory role to help form the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a watchdog agency she first proposed back in 2007.

The move, first reported by ABC News' Jake Tapper, gives Warren an important role in creation of the bureau, but avoids, for now, a confirmation fight in the Senate. Her selection will appease a slew of prominent lawmakers, progressives, and labor unions who in recent months have clamored for her nomination to the post.

After all, the new agency -- part of the sweeping Wall Street reform bill that passed Congress earlier this summer -- was Warren's brainchild. In 2007 Warren, the Harvard Law professor and bailout watchdog, proposed the creation of "a new regulatory body to protect consumers who use credit cards, home mortgages, car loans, and a host of other products.

...................................

She didn't get it. *sigh*

She does, however, get to tell Obama and Geithner who should get the job (not that they're obliged to listen).

4. Uh, I believe that was Geithner's deal was a while back. They don't have to set everything up
before appointing a director.

10. Much better for her to sit in the wings for another year, while the GOP won't confirm her!
How wise of a political move would that be?
Probably like a Teabag Brain Fart. :eyes:

I understand the distrust of politicians,
but I don't understand some folks wanting them to be stupid as hell,
just to make some happy.

White House To Tap Warren To Set Up Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

The White House has tapped Elizabeth Warren as a special adviser to help set up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, ABC News is reporting. The move allows her to act as an interim head of the CFPB and will enable her to begin setting up the agency immediately and prevent the GOP from filibustering her nomination. Warren could serve until Obama nominates a permanent director -- a nomination he's not required to make for some time. Obama could also nominate her as the permanent director in the near future, a prospect that has been discussed among top aides, according to a person familiar with the White House deliberations. Warren will also be named as a special adviser directly to Obama, ABC reported.

16. Well, that answers one question I had.
What kind of excuses will we hear when President Obama fails to appoint Warren? Now we know.

5. Strange wording.
I can't tell if that's just the title to temporarily avoid confirmation or whether she is being installed as a figurehead. The piece makes it sound like she will be unable to actually lead on vital issues or act as administrator.

Hopefully CNN and ABC have this wrong.

7. Look, the Banks don't want this consumer protection agency....
and they sure as hell don't want Warren. So the game is to stall until there's a nice, safe Republican Congress.

What ever Lola wants....

9. looks like the operative word there is "appease" -- as in the aim is political appeasement
rather than meaningful action.

12. Well, earlier today I was asked if I would STFU once Warren was appointed to head the agency.
I said I'd be the first one cheering. Now I'm putting my pom poms up. Would 1 crumb for the 'lesser people' have been too much to ask? Guess so.

14. "Avoids a confirmation fights" *Sigh*
That's all the Dems do is avoid fights. It would be nice to see them actually coming out swinging.

Frankly, that's a big reason why the Democratic party is having problems right now, because they keep bending over backwards avoiding a fight. Bipartisanship, being diplomatic is nice and all, but you absolutely have to get your hands dirty, get into a fight in order to do what is right for the people of this country. If all you continue to do is avoid a fight, the American people will leave you in droves.

15. According to HuffPo - She's the Interim Head of the Agency
She did get it.

The White House has tapped Elizabeth Warren as a special adviser to help set up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, ABC News is reporting. Warren could serve until Obama nominates a permanent director -- a nomination he's not required to make for some time.

To borrow a phrase - it depends on what your definition of "some time" is. As I understand it, he could keep her as interim director and let her do the job until 2012.

When banks are required to obey consumer protection policies enforced by Warren, I'll believe it.
