Pro-Gay DC Mayor Adrian Fenty Loses
Pro-Gay DC Mayor Adrian Fenty Loses

Washington DC Mayor Adrian Fenty, who enthusiastically signed the city's marriage equality bill into law, has lost his reelection primary bid against City Council Chairman Vince Gray.

Gray's victory is tantamount to election: Democrats hold a 10-1 registration edge in the capital city, and Republicans aren't even fielding a mayoral candidate. Fenty already has ruled out taking the GOP line on the ballot. The mayor's defeat comes despite the fact that a recent Washington Post poll showed 56% of Washingtonians happy about the direction of the city. But other community leaders, including Gray and his city council colleagues, complained that the mayor didn't include them in decision-making. Fenty blamed his image problems on unpopular decisions he had to make to improve the city.

Gray was endorsed by the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club and a number of labor unions, including the police and fire departments.

4. Better than Fenty's, it seems
After months of sitting on the fence, many of the city’s most prominent LGBT activists have come out in support of City Council Chairman Vincent Gray (D-At-Large) over Mayor Adrian Fenty (D) in the city’s Tuesday Democratic primary.

. . .

Gray and Fenty each have longstanding records of support on LGBT issues, with Gray voting for and Fenty signing the city’s historic same-sex marriage law last December.

The Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, the city’s largest LGBT political group, has endorsed Gray.

The Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance, a non-partisan group, gave Gray a rating score on LGBT and some-non-LGBT issues of +8.5 on a rating scale of -10 to +10. The group gave Fenty a score of +4, saying the mayor disagreed with its position on some issues, including a gay adoption bill that LGBT activists backed but Fenty initially opposed at the advice of his attorney general, Peter Nickles, on grounds that it would violate federal adoption related rules.

5. Fenty rightfully got his walking papers
This Fenty story has been really interesting to me with the more research I have done. Today I was able to talk with a former employee in his Administration and she basically agreed with a lot of the people interviewed in the feature pieces in this week's Washington Post.

In simple terms, I commented on the Fenty story on my sarcastic politics blog, Prune Juice Media. Check it out when you get a second:

Enjoy!
