2. Because it keeps our focus off the REAL issues
Like double digit unemployment, our perpetually sagging economy, etc.

If the media covered what is truly relevant, I believe there would be masses taking to the streets. Instead we are dumbed down by stories of controversies far far away (unless you live in Gainesville, FL), and are on outrage burnout for manufactured stories.
