NY Attorney General Democratic Primary 9/14
Edited on Wed Sep-08-10 09:42 PM by Renew Deal
This is the most important race in the country that nobody is talking about. The NYS AG race is important because it governs "Wall Street" and much of the nations businesses. The current AG Andrew Cuomo is moving up to Governor and there is an open race to replace him as AG. There are 5 fairly different candidates running. Unlike 2006, there are no heavy hitters like Cuomo Jr. and Mark Green. I have to learn about these 5 from scratch. The five candidates are:

Richard Brodsky: http://www.richardbrodsky.com

Sean Coffey: http://coffey2010.com

Eric Dinallo: http://www.ericdinallo.com

Kathleen Rice: http://kathleenrice.com

Eric Schneiderman: http://www.ericschneiderman.com
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Here's a brief bio from a blog called "Above the Law

Kathleen Rice — Nassau County D.A.: She was the first woman to be elected a D.A. on Long Island. She’s hoping the suburban credibility will help her not just on Long Island, but also in upstate New York. She wants to out people who are mean to the environment. She’s the front-runner, with 4% of the vote.

Eric Schneiderman — New York State Senator: Elected official from the upper west side is doing what politicians from the upper west side do. He’s putting together a coalition of “labor, liberal and black voters in New York City,” according to the New York Times. He’s also got endorsements from damn near everybody who wants to be Mayor once Michael Bloomberg decides to go back to being a billionaire. He’s polling at 3%.

Sean Coffey — partner, Bernstein Litowitz Berger & Grossmann: You can’t have a New York election without at least one person trying to buy the office. For this race, that person is Coffey. He’s focusing on upstate concerns. A rich guy who is more concerned about Albany than Wall Street? Well, he should be getting the bankers’ votes. He used to be a partner at (wait for it… Latham). Don’t worry Coffey, you can still win the NYAG’s office without the vote of ATL comments. Though, since you’re polling at 1%, you might want to make a direct appeal to ATL’s twitter following.

Richard Brodsky — New York State Assemblyman: He’s the Assemblyman from Yonkers and Westchester. As an elected official, his signature issue has been regulation of the Indian Point Nuclear plant. Since that issue is so 1985, we’ll see if he has any new tricks tonight. Polling at 1%.

Eric Dinallo — Former Superintendent of Insurance for New York State: Remember when Eliot Spitzer went to D.C. and had sex with that prostitute? Spitzer was down in D.C. to testify in front of Congress about pending crisis facing large insurers like AIG. Also down in D.C. to give testimony? Eric Dinallo. Dinallo really tried to warn people about what was going to happen to companies like AIG. Nobody listened. But unless something really interesting happens tonight, Dinallo has my vote next Tuesday. I might be the only one, Dinallo is currently polling at 0%.

Each of the candidates have varying levels of endorsements. Schneiderman and Brodsky probably have the most "big" endorsements. You can learn about that on their sites.

Schneiderman was endorsed by the NY Times: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=169x9684

Dinallo was endorsed by the NY Daily News: http://www.nydailynews.com/opinions/2010/08/22/2010-08-22_go_with_dinallo.html

If you read those endorsements you'll see a completely different picture of the candidates. The NY Times raves about Schneiderman and considers Rice a throwaway candidate. The Daily News raves about Dinallo and Rice and ignores the other three. It's really a matter of personal preference and that why NYers should take the time to study the candidates and the issues.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

There have been several debates. I have found a couple of them online.

WABC debate from August. http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/video?id=7561334

NY1 Debate from 9/7: http://www.ny1.com/content/125089/ny1-online--democratic-ag-hopefuls-debate-on-ny1

There are also several video clips from a NYS Democratic Lawyers Council Debate available: http://www.youtube.com/user/nydemocraticlawyers#p/c/AED033B40D9E9E7D

I found a live blog of last nights debate at Above the Law: http://abovethelaw.com/2010/09/new-york-state-attorney-general-debate-the-liveblog
___________________________________________________________________________________________

I am going to look for more info on each of the candidates and post it in this thread. I will start one post below for each candidate and build from there. I plan to watch the WABC debate I posted here and post important info down thread. Although I am undecided, I will not pretend to be even handed.

I like other NY DUers don't know who to vote for yet. I like many of you am pretty opinionated and I know who I like to support. This time I need to figure it out and from scratch, as do other DUers. Please help your fellow NY DUers make the best decision possible.

Edited on Wed Sep-08-10 10:16 PM by Renew Deal
I wonder if the First Amendment is offensive to him too. Clown!

He thinks the mosque is inappropriate. I think voting for him would be inappropriate.

8. I'm going to start with Kathleen Rice
Edited on Wed Sep-08-10 09:32 PM by Renew Deal
Because I have some knowledge about her. I am not a fan. She's a republican turned Democrat who didn't vote until 2002 when she was 37. That means she didn't vote for Al Gore in Pennsylvania!!! That's right. Pennsylvania! She moved to NY to run for Nassau County DA. She is supported by the NY State Democratic Chairman who is the Nassau County Dem Chairman, so she has institutional support from the party apparatus.

She's also probably the least connected to him. I'm not sure that she knows what grounds she would have prosecuted him on.

10. My first impression was the same.
I looked at the candidates sites and the two op-eds. I think the NY Times analysis is accurate.

Schneiderman has the best left wing support.
Dinallo has the best experience for the position.
Brodsky is impressive, but not ideologically or stylistically complete.
Coffey is interesting, but he sounds like a great congressional candidate.
Rice is a mixed bag of things that Democratic voters may not like.

I am undecided, but Schneiderman and Dinallo seem like the most interesting to me.

7. I've been trying to figure out
who to vote for!

Rice was a Republican until a few years ago. That kind of knocks her out for me.

Dinallo worked with Spitzer which gives him points in favor.
Scheiderman is supposedly the most liberal and backed by the unions and Citizen Action. I will most likely vote for him, though not decided yet.

The other two I know nothing about really.

Got til Tuesday to find out more.

This is the first time I've ever seen NYS used instead of just NY.

Interesting, but I hope it doesn't catch on. NYS is National Youth Sports. ;-)

35. I'm from NJ, so I'm just an observer who can't vote . . .
. . . but I've been very curious about this race based on TV ads. Of the ones I've seen, I'm most impressed by Coffey. He speaks directly to viewers in his ads, instead of using other politicians and "real" people.

One of the posts here pegs him as a good congressional candidate. Agree -- he may do his best work at the federal level.

Thank you for posting this info! :yourock:
