| What Is Your Favorite American Made Product? |
|
In recognition of our American labor force, I want to start a thread pointing out high quality, American made products. Please provide a link so we know where we can purchase the item. My contribution is the duffel bags from Best American Duffel B A D. These bags are high quality (as good as my old military sea-bags), stylish, and relatively affordable. They are also made in Seattle. http://badbags.com/store/duffel-p-32.html

from the early days of the last century. It looks like a toy but is beefy enough to sew anything, including fake fur. They even did a little gilt and cast metal decoration to make it pleasing to look at as well as use. It runs on AC or DC current and is set up in such away that a treadle could be added at some point.
That's what American workers are capable of producing if management and plutocrats don't get in their way and insist on stripping things down to maximize the profit.

| 124. That sounds like a very nice drum kit. |
|
DW are amongst the finest drums made on the Planet today. If your goddaughter has a DW kit, perhaps a custom-configured kit regarding the finish on the shells and rims, it will likely have a very high retention of its original cost, with the possibility that they may actually increase in value as time goes by, ya never know. They are NOT drums to sell for cheap, even if you REALLY REALLY need the $$$! For insurance purposes you're looking at basic replacement cost value, a DW dealer can give you those numbers. DW drums are descended from the great U.S. made, Camco brand of drums, used by many of the best drummers of the 50s through the early 70s, on many hit records. Here is my hybrid, early-60s (Oak Lawn badge) Camco/2008 DW kit (Camco shells, DW hardware):

Rich Coc0a Fudge
3 cups sugar 2/3 cups Cocoa 1/8 salt 1 1/2 cups milk 1/4 cups butter 1 tsp vanilla extract Butter a plate, set aside. In heavy 4 quart saucepan combine sugar cocoa and salt: stir in milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to full rolling boil. Boil without stirring, to 234 degrees. (soft ball stage) or until syrup when dropped into very cold water, forms a soft ball which flattens when removed from water. (bulb of candy thermometer should not rest on the bottom of saucepan). Remove form heat, add vanilla and butter. DO NOT STIR*. Cool at room temperature to 110 degrees(lukewarm). Beat with wooden spoon until fudge thickens and loses some of its gloss. quickly spread onto prepared plate or pan. Cool, cut into squares, pig out.
*I stir where it says not to stir, and my fudge has a great grainy, dusty feel. I did it their way once, but I thought vigorous stirring in of air will change the texture.
I wonder what would happen if I used a mixer set on high at this point?

| 40. My dogs' vote: Nylabone Galileo "bone" |
|
Want dog chew toy that they will love and will last for a seriously long time? Look no further than the Galileo. My three personal dogs love them, and the rescues can't get enough of them. Even the most aggressive chewers will have a tough time doing much damage to these. I routinely get well over a year out of each one. Every 6 months or so I'll toss a couple new ones into the "pit bull room" just so that there's a good rotation of old v worn in. I find them new on eBay more cheaply than from Petco or Petsmart. They also love the Nylabone Nylaring, but they don't last quite as long. http://www.nylabone.com/product-finder/my-dog-is/dog-me...

I guess since they already wrecked the Singer brand-- Viking and Pfaff won't be far behind, which is a crying shame. My husband's workwear comes from a union shop in the US-- AllAmericanClothing.com or http://www.justiceclothing.com/thereis/justice/unionpri... No Levi Strauss sweatshop rags for him! as well as his boots http://www.americanmadeworkboots.com/carolina1809.html or http://www.theunionbootpro.com/index.cfm (Last visit to the RedWing shop found most of them made offshore). I make his welder caps and boxers (those are homemade but M.I.A. with cottage slave labor lol.) I use scraps for the caps from the fabric I make pajama pants for my son and nephews. The fabric though is milled overseas as there are no cotton fabric mills left in the US. I would prefer local sourced fabrics. Myself, I try and make my clothes, buy from thrifts but the more time I waste online, the less I sew and may soon have to wear my bathrobe out.

Leatherman tool. Without it I feel like I'm underessed. Great customer service/warranty
My Snap-On, MAC, Bonney, Channel-Lock, Proto, Robinson, and Craftsman tools. Great rugged stuff with good ( rarely needed ) warranties My roll-way has no Harbor Freight junk.
All the Ford, Mopar, and GM vehicles I had/have. A few minor issues covered under warrantys but never a stranding breakdown.
The employees designing and making these products may well ( and I'm sure have ) utilized my employer's services, which helps me beyond having good stuff.

| 91. Bark River Knife and Tool Company ... |
|
Edited on Mon Sep-06-10 06:32 PM by spin
The goals of Bark River Knife & Tool Co. are to produce only the finest semi-production cutting tools available on the market. These products are aimed for use by genuine outdoorsman who need real performance in the field. The Specialty-High Quality knife market has steadfastly grown over the last 20 years. This growth, that started with mild interest in the late 1970’s and has snowballed into a major segment of today’s market. You don’t have to be a connoisseur to appreciate an exemplary cutting tool. Bark River Knife and Tool employs A-2 steel carbon steel in most if its knives. A2 differs from other high carbon steels because of the addition of significant amounts of chromium and molybdenum. A2 has a favorable reputation among woodworkers for its superior edge holding properties. Owner, Mike Stewart, has found over his many years making knives that this steel offers the best in edge-holding and ease of sharpening qualities using their proprietary heat treatment, and convex blade grinds. The heat treat applied to Bark River knives is complex and time-consuming, involving two different metallurgical companies. You can order our products on-line from dealers across the U.S. You can contact us at: Bark River Knife & Tool 6911 County Road 426 M Pt. 5 Rd. Escanaba, MI 49829 906-789-1801 http://www.barkriverknifetool.com/aboutus.asp The company makes small runs of semi-custom knives with an amazing variety of styles. They are always coming up with new designs. You can view their selection best at a dealer such as KnivesShipFree.com http://www.knivesshipfree.com/Bark-River-Knives-465 An example: Bark River Knives: Gunny - Spalted Maple Burl w/ Black Liners $215.56 Specs:
Overall Length: 8.4 Inches Blade Length: 3.775 Inches Blade Steel: A-2 @ 58rc Blade thickness: .154 Inch Weight: 5.625 Ounceshttp://www.knivesshipfree.com/Bark-River-Knives-Gunny-S... Note: these knives have a convex edge and are best sharpened by stropping on a leather hone impregnated with abrasive compound. Once you become used to the technique, it's far superior to other methods of sharpening (IMO). edited to add link

|
| 169. How did I forget Schilke?! I had a Schilke cornet for a short time in HS. |
|
The band director made us return it because it "stood out too much." Frankly I think he wanted us all only buying instruments he was getting kickbacks on through select local dealers. Schilke HQ is near here and Renold Schilke personally was more than happy to take back an instrument that wasn't wanted.

| 187. Communication Satellites. |
|
I'll give you a few links but America builds and constructs a good number of communication satellites. Admittedly they're often launched by the Europeans or the Russians, and it's not 100% American inside... but they are built here... http://www.ssloral.com / http://www.boeing.com/defense-space/space/bss/index.htm... http://www.orbital.com / http://www.lockheedmartin.com / - they make a few other things besides satellites - like Trident missiles, space shuttles, fighter jets... AFAIK, America leads the way in designing and making satellites... Without these communication satellites, and the people who designed, built and put these things into space, the world would be a very different place - and much bigger too. Mark.
