Nevada birther gov candidate: Pay $25/day to legally speed
Source: Associated Press

One Nevada gubernatorial hopeful sees a speedy fix to Nevada's budget crisis. Nonpartisan candidate Eugene "Gino" DiSimone believes people would pay for the privilege to drive up to 90 mph on designated highways — and fill the state's depleted coffers.

... After setting up an account, anyone in a hurry could dial in, and for $25 charged to a credit card, be free to speed for 24 hours.

Although DiSimone is allegedly "nonpartisan," he's a birther:

14. 90 in a 75mph zone?
Aren't quite a few people already doing that?

I've driven 90 between Santa Fe NM and Albuquerque a hell of a lot more than once.

4. Hey, Gino, why not do it and go over 225 on I-10
and tell me how that goes. Mimumum speed should be around 110.

5. They have something like that here in Miami - it wasn't the intent, but....
They took out the HOV lanes on a 'free' highway and put in toll 'express lanes' that are paid for using a prepaid transponder that is used on state toll roads. This is the 'fast lane'.

7. So, instead of encouraging carpooling they just reward the wealthy with the privelege..
Hope it doesn't spread, this "bright idea".

10. Thanks, brings back memories of all the turnpikes in the East.
Called "Freeways" out here because of the difference-- we never have to stop every few miles to throw change into a basket.

I never understood the logic in this day and age, I understand the concept, that people who use it pay for it, but our traffic is bad enough already.

If we ever introduced tolls the two hour twenty minute ride into the city for me would become four hours.

It's just over an hour without traffic. And the worst part, the toll plaza at the Bay Bridge. Thirty minutes to go 1/4 mile.

15. They are actually making toll roads out of formerly free ones here.
It's messed up. The only OK part about it is that the pre-paid transponders allow you to maintain highway speed. There are cash toll booths on the turnpike, but they are off to the side. One project actually sold the highway to a company from Spain that will get to charge tolls and keep the profits after renovating the road. (If I remember the details correctly)

21. It's not new.
A lot of cities are doing congestion charging or cordon charging (forcing people to pay extra to enter certain zones, drive in certain lanes, etc.)

We've been "encouraging carpooling" for forty years and people still don't do it because gas is cheap and organizing a carpool is a pain in the ass.

There is no really equitable way to address the problem of traffic congestion. The rich will always be able to afford to purchase certain privileges denied to the poor. Some would argue if you're driving in the first place you're already "privileged". But at least here, the state is collecting some money it can use to support public transport and other modes used by the poor.

It's an attempt to make an already unequitable system slightly more equitable.

19. They did that here in MN on I 394
althought it's still HOV (cars, buses and motorcycles) and added those prepaid toll transponders for single occupant vehicles.

The big problem, other than introducing the idea of toll lanes to MN (thanks, Pawlenty, you jerk), is that people think it's a high speed lane as well.

If you drive the speed limit, folks will tailgate you, they'll honk, and lots of them will cross the double white lines into the non-toll lane and pass you on the right.

Very frustrating.

23. We have plastic delineators dividing the toll/non toll lanes.
http://www.trafficwks.com/images/categories/134.bmp

When the toll system first rolled out there were lots of missing delineators due to people entering and exiting the lanes in the middle.

6. What a stupid idea.
Pay more to cause trouble. As though I don't see enough people in expensive cars acting like they own the damn road.

18. what will be the charge to scrape them up off the pavement when they wreck?...
so you allow them 90, and they do 5-10mph over that it makes the roads unsafe for others. These birthers can't think beyond their own immediate thought they can't look down the long path.

24. actually, this would be a good idea for all western states.
make it apply only to rural interstate highways. i'd propose that you'd have to have a higher minimum level of liability insurance as well as driving history and vehicle safety check. transponders could be put in the cars similar to the ones used for toll roads.
