13. In Tough Times, Authoritarian Sells...

Many have pointed out the economic distress that paved the way for the rise of Musolini and then Hitler...and how people look for someone who will make the "trains run on time" to lead them out of the tough times. Many were hoping this President would exhibit the authoritarian streak of FDR that pushed through the New Deal but this hasn't been the case. Instead this administration bent over backwards to "rise above" and in turn got dragged down into the mud by an opposition that was hellbent on failure from the outset. In the interim they framed the economic distress as one this administration is making worse and only they can prevent more "socialism" or defend "capitalism"...a lot of bullshit but its echoed 24/7 on the cables and hate radio.

In fairness, this administration came in facing an economy in free fall and the moves they made, like them or not, did stop the bleeding, but you can't prove how bad something is that didn't happen. The mess left behind by 8 years of rushpublican economic slash and burn is still being felt and the voting public (encouraged by the corporate media) are not satisfied that things are getting better. As has always been the case, how the person feels about their finances is the biggest determinator when it comes to how they vote. Right now things look bad, people are scared and/or impatient and the predators in the GOOP are ready to pounce...
