Poll question: Why has no one ever made a film of the musical Les Miserables?
Edited on Fri Sep-03-10 05:24 PM by hedgehog
This mash-up of a film adaption and the musical score shows the potential here:

So, is this a case of the money not being there, or would this film just be too subversive?

1. Because Liam Neeson is a cyborg built by Monsanto.
So that version doesn't count.

4. There are 20 film versions, according to IMDB.
Not that this conspiracy theory wouldn't still be stupid, even if there weren't.

6. There is an older non-musical film, and there is a dvd of the "dream cast" assembled
from many different stage productions, but it is more like a reader's theater... it isn't a film production per se.

It is my favorite musical, and I love Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean, and keep that image in my head. I would hesitate to see a popular musical film.... I can't imagine there is any way it could be nearly as good.

7. There are multiple film versions of this book, and numerous
recordings of concert performances of the musical, but as far as I know, no film version of the fully staged musical.

I love the music even though I am under the impression it's considered quite kitchy in some circles. What can I say? It brings shivers and tears whenever I hear it.

9. I wholeheartedly agree

I wholeheartedly agree. I can only take so much of the trendy, the cynical, and the angst-ridden-- sometimes music is wonderful by its own grace.

8. I was once in a revival of a play...
It was a musical that was based on a movie, that was based on a play. It ended up being more of a showcase with just enough story line to follow. I wanted to go full blown rock opera, but I was shot down.

10. I've never seen the musical, just heard the album, but it's
a fairly decent adaption of a very long, very deep book.

11. I'm just afraid Nick Jonas will be cast as Marius
Miley Cyrus as Eponine, and Taylor Swift as Cosette.

But seriously, I melt into a puddle of goo every time I hear Michael Ball sing and I love love love Lea Salonga.
