Pat Robertson: "Muslims could end up taking over the city council to pass ordinances"

http://www.tennessean.com/article/20100820/NEWS06/100820022/Pat-Robertson-Muslims-could-bribe-Rutherford-officials-to-get-mosque-

<snip>

Robertson said money from wealthy Muslims in Saudi Arabia could be used to pay for the mosque's construction. The Middle East country, he said, practices a more extreme form of Islam.

"This isn't just religion," Robertson said.

He went on to say that Muslims could end up taking over the city council to pass ordinances that require public prayer and foot washing.

Before long, you'll have girls in schools with head dresses on, he said.

11. Sadly yes
An older woman we know is seriously afraid of this. She is a fierce women's rights advocate, when it comes to voting and work, not abortion. She rants on and on about women's rights being taken away if we give the Muslims any rights. And she's a Baptist that votes for Republicans who would take her rights away in a snap if they could get away with it.

People make no damn sense.

34. She is not a fierce advocate, but a lukewarm one...
and I doubt that her fierce advocacy for women's rights to work extends to the right of a woman being allowed to be employed as a pulpit-pounding grifter in her bullshit baptist church

57. she should check out where SoBapts are + are going
Albert Mohler, president of the SBC seminary in Nashville, closed a whole department at the seminary (I believe it was the department of Christian Counseling, a department that had an extremely high reputation in the world of seminaries.) WHY???? because most, if not all, of the professors (with very reputable degrees) were women, and Mohler does NOT believe women should be in authority over men.

It was very funny (in a tragic way) to see how he and others supported Palin for VP; women, according to this group, are subordinate to men in marriage and in the church--just not in government. Of course they would have had problems with claiming women should never be in authority in government, considering the various female leaders in the OT.

(For those who might be interested in male and female roles in the Bible, check out the pro-subordination arguments under the term "Biblical complementarianism" and the anti-subordination arguments under the term "Biblical egalitarianism." For more pro-subordination stuff--if you can stand it--search "manly men, womanly women.")

61. No, she is a fierce advocate for women
Republicans make my head pop, but when the women's outreach center in this town needs money, she's there.

Now you may be in a personal position to degrade this woman and women like her, but when you're in a small town with limited resources, you can't alienate these people.

In other words, your post and attitude are useless in ACCOMPLISHING anything.

The religious right has been trying to force prayer in school for years.

Oh, and foot washing? We were checked for foot problems in gym class and told to make sure we dryed between our toes after showering to avoid athlete's foot. In 1973. Forced foot washing-the new GOP outrage of the week.

Aren't there girls in schools with head scrafs now? I see them all over - so what? I recall having to wear a scraf or hat in church every Sunday, no one tried to stop me...There are beliefs that women can't wear pants too, so we have girls in school wearing dresses and skirts...ooh, scary...

45. Only humble people can worship...
I humbly worship Mother Earth... and our greater cosmic connection. That might be God for all I know. I don't really care.

Jesus' own humble nature is what makes me like him... his ability to wash the feet of his followers is one of the nicest things he ever did. Saving the whore from being stoned was another... hanging out with lepers was pretty cool too.

I hope you were being sarcastic. Really.

27. Foot washing is/was practiced by a number of Protestant churches.
Even some of the Baptist groups practiced it, as well as Pentecostals, Mennonites, Methodists, Adventists. Pat Robertson doesn't even know his own church history. And last time I looked, it was Pat Robertson and his ilk that was promoting public prayers, not Muslims.

Of course that is why it was practiced in many Protestant churches, as well as by Anglicans and Catholics. One has to wonder if Pat Robertson even reads the Bible sometimes.

When Jerry Falwell rattled off all the various groups of Americans who he asserted caused 9/11, Robertson's reply was "I totally concur." Muslims, radical or otherwise, were not one of the groups mentioned.

Fuck him.
