Muslim leaders to abandon plans for Ground Zero community center
Source: Ha'aretz

After weeks of heated debate over plans for an Islamic community center near Ground Zero - the site of the 9/11 attacks on New York - it seems Muslim leaders will soon back down, agreeing to move to a new site.

The decision follows a high-profile campaign against the project that included advertisements on New York buses showing images of the burning Twin Towers, an iconic landmark razed when al-Qaida terrorists flew packed passenger planes into them in 2001. The New York Republican party is also said to be planning a hostile television campaign.

Sources in New York said on Monday that Muslim religious and business leaders will announce plans to abandon the project in the next few days.

28. How about the Muslim Gay Dance Club?
Hopefully they can keep that idea alive!

Dancing cures all! Or at least helps you forget about what's ailing you!

If you wish to benefit from tolerance, you must be tolerant of others!

It's NOT a One-Way street!

And I stand by my point that everyone on all sides needs to dance more! Especially with each other!

Note: Edited to clarify

50. Tolerance has to start somewhere, and the U.S. Constitution
makes very clear that no one should be discriminated against for their religious beliefs, even if we do not agree with them.

Christian fundies, the very same people who are exhibiting this faux outrage of the mosque, hate gays and consider their 'life-style' to be a sin.

Muslims living in the U.S. are required, like every one else, to observe the laws of this country regardless or their own personal beliefs.

They also, like everyone else, are entitled to the same protections under the law as everyone else.

If tolerance is what you are concerned about, we could start right here. This country has killed over one million innocent Muslims over the ten years and continues to do so today. How tolerant is that, and no doubt supported by the same tea-baggers screaming over this mosque.

It is a sad day for the U.S. if this story is true and a few prejudiced hateful individuals have managed to violate the Constitutional rights of others simply because of their ethnicity.

Excellent example of tolerance.

72. Christians vs Islamists
I can't speak to the Uganda situation, or any other than my own, but the worst any of my Baptist relatives or their friends have ever done is tell me God loves me and that I should "change my ways"!

They did tell me that I'll go to Hell if I don't sign on the Jesus line, but none ever threatened to hasten the trip for me!

Where ARE the stories of gays in America being murdered by religiously motivated Christians? Maybe I am sheltered and just not seeing them!

73. Matthew Shepherd.
Do you think he was murdered for his wallet? I've been threatened, assaulted, harassed, and discriminated against in housing and in the workplace. I have no job because of anti-gay Christians. The difference is that here we have a Constitution that will lock Christians up for murdering gays... if there were no laws protecting us from murder, I have no doubt Christians would get out their pitchforks and start the slaughter, just like their counterparts in relatively lawless parts of the world.

Think about it. Property in that area of Manhattan is pretty pricey. Now they have to sell it and will probably have to take a huge loss. Does anyone doubt that some of the major funders of the campaign against the Muslim center are NYC area developers???

And it isn't actual a mosque, it is an Islamic Cultural Center, and there is absolutely no good reason why it should not be built on the original site as far as I am concerned.

the Muslims indeed have a Constitutional right to build the Mosque on private property...yet, the stain of their Muslim brothers with the 911 Attack rubs salt into the wound right at the pulse of America...it is disrespectful on a global proportion....If the Muslims want to blend with America...they need to respect America in the same step. Their choice of site is insulting.

Business people, restaurant people, NYPD, pregnant women, Muslims of all walks of life were victims on that day, just like everyone else there. Just fyi. Just over 10% who died that day came from other countries as well, did you know that? 310 victims were not American at all. The UK lead the list with 68 lost. 16 from Jamaica, a small nation to lose so many so far away.Jordan, South Korea, Congo, Germany, Japan, Columbia, Argentina, Lebanon, China, the list goes on. The globe, every faith, every economic strata, every color and creed we come in as human beings was attacked that day, and all have a right, and should have our welcome, to commemorate that shared loss as they see fit.

Will you join the movement to tear down churches in the immediate vicinity of the Oklahoma City Federal Building, leveled by that Christian terrorist?

Will you join in to demand that what's left of the Branch Davidians get the fu** out of Waco after their grand Christian scheme ended in loss of human lives?

Or is it okay for Christians to have bad manners, and only Muslims need to toe the line?

24. If true, it's a good decision from a religious standpoint
I mean, if Christians were planning to build a church somewhere controversial and provoked a similar amount of ire over it, if they followed the New Testament's exhortations, they would choose the path of peace and find a new location. They would walk the walk of causing no offense. "We had our hearts set on taking off the top of that mountain and putting a megachurch up there. But we understand the anger over our plans and we don't wish to do harm to the cause of Christianity. So we'll build elsewhere and be content."

It's a far better testimony of the nature of their religion if they set aside belligerence --- even if well justified --- and make concessions that show they are committed to what they profess, and that what they profess really does produce better-behaving, peaceful, loving people.

I imagine right wing Christians expected a war from Muslims over this. What a shock to their systems if Muslims are better at "Christianity" than Christians.

25. Mayor Michael Bloomberg: 'Sad Day For America' If Ground Zero Mosque Plan Is Killed
Edited on Mon Aug-16-10 05:25 PM by Douglas Carpenter

NEW YORK New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says it would be "a sad day for America" if opponents successfully kill plans for a mosque proposed near the World Trade Center site.

Bloomberg has been among a few outspoken elected officials supporting the plans for an Islamic center and mosque two blocks from ground zero.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/16/bloomberg-sad-...

"Let us not forget that Muslims were among those murdered on 9/11 and that our Muslim neighbors grieved with us as New Yorkers and as Americans. We would betray our values and play into our enemies' hands if we were to treat Muslims differently than anyone else. In fact, to cave to popular sentiment would be to hand a victory to the terrorists and we should not stand for that." Mayor Michael Bloomberg

I wish that Europeans who released the Libyan terrorist under the guise of a compassionate release would have waited for a second source/opinion.

31. U-S-A! U-S-A!
The Ground Zero mosque that wasn't actually a mosque and wasn't even going to be at Ground Zero will not be built.

It is indeed a great day for ignorance and religious intolerance!

34. Update (from NY Daily News): "That's complete misinformation. That's crazy," El-Gamal said.
UPDATE from our Sam Goldsmith, who's been following this issue and just got off the phone with Sharif El-Gamal, the developer of the project:

"That's complete misinformation. That's crazy," El-Gamal said.

"That's totally totally wrong. This is more misinformation in this web of misinformation."

"We've never even talked about this as an idea. Everything is on track and moving forward at the same location."

35. It was probably not a good idea to plan this center so close
to the elections anyway. They could have acquired the land via third parties and then announced in December.

It became a victim of election politics far more than repuke/teabagger intolerance.

46. I find this sickening
I'm deeply embarrassed by the assholes who call themselves Americans and pushed against this Muslim Center. I have very close and dear friends who are Muslims and this just sickens me. It makes me want to weep in disappointment.

But they probably received plenty of death threats so they decided caution was the best move.

58. This does not speak well for Ha'aretz
I wonder what their sources were and why they were confident enough to run the piece.

Normally, they are a pretty well-regarded news outlet.

My apologies for posting the story if it turns out to be baloney.

54. Remember 'Raisin in the Sun'? Money very well may have changed hands
to move the site elsewhere. The Governor of NY State offered to subsidize another site months ago.

Life may have imitated art--an object lesson in bigotry that opened on Broadway 51 years ago.

Pro-Mosque Mom Who Lost Pregnant Daughter In Trade Center: 9/11 Families 'Not Monolithic'
by Christina Bellantoni
As plans to build an Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero in New York City become political fodder for the fall elections on a national scale, it's become shorthand to imply that all 9/11 families oppose the erection of the mosque two blocks from the site where terrorists downed the World Trade Center nearly nine years ago.

But in fact, no cohesive position has emerged from the thousands of 9/11 families who have been politically influential on many issues in the past. One group which has opposed war has come out strongly in favor of the mosque project, known as Cordoba House. Others have avoided even addressing the issue.

"There is no simple, singular 9/11 group who really should or could speak for all 9/11 family members," said Donna Marsh O'Connor of September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, a coalition of more than 250 families which recently endorsed the mosque. Since the endorsement, the membership numbers have grown, she said.

O'Connor told TPM in an interview that it's unfair for groups like Debra Burlingame's 9/11 Families for a Safe and Strong America to act as if they are representing everyone who lost loved ones in the attacks. O'Connor's 29-year-old daughter Vanessa, pregnant at the time, was killed working on the 93rd floor of one of the twin towers.
