Who Are They Trying to Kid?
By ARNAUD DE BORCHGRAVE
UPI Editor at Large
WASHINGTON, May. 14 (UPI) -- Two of Washington's best-informed men confirmed it so it must be true. President Bush and his consigliere Karl Rove bet on who had read the most books in a year. Mike McConnell, the director of national intelligence, told friends Rove won with 117 books and Bush was a close second with 104 books.
Unhappy over his loss to his close confidant, Bush asked for a recount -- in words. And the president won by 1.7 percent. The story is not apocryphal. In fact, none other than McConnell's predecessor as the nation's top spymaster, John Negroponte, now deputy secretary of state, confirmed it. The president, he explained, reads two to three books a week and does not watch television.

Oh, well then, who can doubt it? It was "confirmed" by Negroponte -Commander Guy read 104 books. (The part where CG changes the rules in order to win does have a certain ring of truth)

And another another peek into madness from UPI-

snip>
A Texan friend of long standing called on him recently and confided to his Washington hosts that Bush had said three times, bringing a clenched fist to his chest, "I'm the president." To remind visiting political opponents, he said, would be normal. But the close friend said he was a little taken aback as he had never seen Bush in this mode before.

1. I sincerely, sincerely doubt he's read even a fifth of that
This is, after all, the man who didn't know about the Sunnis and Shi'ites in Iraq.

Anyone who picks up the fucking newspaper knows that.

2. heh. I read a book at day.
OK, 1/3 of it is crap, mysteries, sci fi, and such stuff, but I read a page at a glance, and even long histories and bios are done in a day and a half.

I cannot imagine rove reading books, not to mention Bush reading anything other than comic books.

3. Arnaud de Borchgrave is a fascist.
Not that that should influence anyone's reading of the story. ;-)

4. Ah, irony.
It's as delicious as when the guy who's on vacation half the year complains about Iraqis taking a few weeks off.

6. May I be the first to say BULL FUCKING SHIT.
Two books a week? Even admitting that Bush doesn't do any presidentin' that involves anything more than photo ops and corn cobs -- GMAFB. DO. NOT. BELIEVE. IT.

I know Ph.D.'s in English who don't read that much. I call bullshit. Again.

8. Horseshit.
There is no fucking way that man read 104 books last year. For proof, all he has to do is open his mouth and speak to prove what a lie that is.

15. I believe it, he doesn't have anything else to do. Dick put them up to it to keep W and Rove
out of the way.

Cheney is in control. He let Rove win the elections and let Bush try to get rid of Social Security. After he screwed that up so badly, Dick wants the two of them to stay out of every thing.

16. He might have "read" 104 comic books in a year,
but I doubt it. Probably has a book of jokes in the bathroom to keep him occupied while on the porcelain. Maybe he read 104 pages of those. Who knows? 104 actual books? Not in his lifetime.

17. Let's pretend this is true. We should really be pissed off!
Not that I believe it at all, but if true, clearly Bush is spending way too much time reading and not enough presidenting! This is what he does with his time instead of leading the country and fixing the problem he started in Iraq!
