Rather, I'd posit that the start of the divide occurred at the hands of people like Jane Hamsher, who joined up with Grover Norquist to help kill a progressive bill.

1930s - progressives who criticized FDR's New Deal
1948 - Progressives who ran against Harry Truman
1960 - Progressives who lobbied from the DNC convention in opposition to JFK's nomination
1968 - Progressives who threatened (and did) sit out the presidential election
1980 - Progressives who worked to convince delegates for Jimmy Carter to change their votes to Ted Kennedy on the convention floor.
2000 - Ralph Nader

Progressives who see no problem hurling all manner of vitriol at other Democrats but get whiny/pouty when it's given back.

Long story short, Progressives who believe they, alone, are the "true Democrats" although they've not participated in the party very long - relatively speaking.

Just a short history lesson. You don't have to like it. But the facts are not in dispute.
