| White House official: Obama "expected to renominate" Goodwin Liu |

 WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Senate Republicans have blocked confirmation votes on two Bay Area judicial nominees, Goodwin Liu and Edward Chen, and returned the nominations to President Obama, who must decide whether to resubmit them when Congress returns from recess next month. Obama nominated Liu, a UC Berkeley law professor, to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in February. The president named Chen, a federal magistrate, to the U.S. District Court in San Francisco in August 2009, and renominated him this January after opponents blocked a floor vote. Each has won Senate Judiciary Committee approval on a party-line 12-7 vote, but has yet to be considered on the Senate floor. A White House official, who asked not to be identified, said Friday that Obama is expected to renominate them. Liu, a former Rhodes scholar and Supreme Court clerk, has been labeled an extreme liberal by Republican opponents, who cite his support of same-sex marriage and affirmative action. Chen's opponents point to his background as an American Civil Liberties Union lawyer in San Francisco from 1985 until 2001, when federal judges appointed him as a magistrate.
