(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - First Lady Michelle Obama is being criticized as "living large" as she vacations in Spain with daughter Sasha during tough economic times.

The White House has called a "private trip" and one on which Obama and her friends are paying their own way.

But New York Daily News blogger Andrea Tantaros, a former congressional staffer for Republican lawmakers, writes that it doesn't set the best example as she and what Tantaros said is "40 of her closest friends" stay in 60 to 70 rooms in a pricey resort. There is also the expense of the Secret Service entourage that follows her everywhere.

"Not exactly what one would call cutting back in troubled times," Tantaros wrote. She is calling the first lady a "modern-day Marie Antoinette," a reference to the French queen who spent lavishly on clothes and jewels without worrying about her subjects' plight.

There is also the number of vacations.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times , by the end of the summer that will total eight this year. That has included New York in March, Chicago, their hometown, over Memorial Day, Los Angeles in June, Camp David in July, Maine in July where they visited Acadia National Park, and now Spain. Coming up is a trip to the Florida Gulf Coast on Aug. 14, said to be meant to encourage tourists who may be hesitant to travel to the coast because of the BP oil spill, and 10 days in Martha's Vineyard starting Aug. 19.
