(Mods: I posted asking about this in Veterans but the title doesn't make it remotely clear what this is about.)

As part of the 2009 defense authorization, money was authorized to pay $500 per month for every month your contract was extended. The application deadline is October 21st of this year, but apparently the DoD hasn't been very good about telling us (I only found out because my dad heard about it on the radio). The period covers 2001-2008, though almost all stop-losses happened in 2003. Average payout is $3700; mine is less, yours might be more.

Normally I just ignore stuff my dad forwards me because it's usually "forward this and Bill Gates will send you a check for $500" stuff, but just to show this is actually going on:

If you know a veteran who was stop lossed, tell them.

Here is Form DD 2944: www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/infomgt/forms/eforms/dd2944.pdf

Fill it out and fax or mail it to your relevant branch today because the deadline is coming fast.

This is totally separate from the post-9/11 GI bill.

3. I am spitting nails about this -- less than 20% of those eligible have applied
This is totally unacceptable. I understand it's hard to find people after they separate, but come on.

9. I'm not expecting 100% notification... but less than 20%?
This really pisses me off. That and the fact that it took 7 years from the use of stop-loss for Congress to authorize this.
