Woman's nude pics end up on Web after call to Dell tech rep

Woman's nude pics end up on Web after call to Dell tech rep

Tara Fitzgerald of Sacramento needed help. The nude photos she had taken for her boyfriend were nowhere to be found on her computer, so she called Dell in December 2008. She was patched through to support tech Riyaz Shaikh, an employee of call service center in India, and gave him permission to search her PC remotely. What happened next was horrifying, said Fitzgerald:

"I watched him take the pictures out of my e-mail. I watched him."

More than a dozen of those pictures ended up on a site called "bitchtara." Shaikh offered his "help" again, allegedly telling Fitzgerald he could work on taking down the site if she sent him a brand new Dell laptop. Fitzgerald agreed:

"And I'm telling myself, my conscience is talking to me saying, 'Tara, don't send this. What are you doing? Are you crazy?' I sent it anyways because I really believed in this guy. I really had faith that he was protecting my dignity."

Both Fitzgerald and reporter George Warren of News10 have contacted Dell about the situation, but the company has yet to respond. To read more about Fitzgerald's story, go to News10 and KGO-TV.

Tech support rep offers to "work from home"

Fitzgerald admitted that what she did next was remarkably naive.

She said Shaikh convinced her to buy him a new Dell laptop in Sacramento and ship it to his home in Mumbai so that he could work on her case from home. A parcel shipping order from UPS shows Fitzgerald spent $195 to ship the laptop by next-day air on Jan. 20, 2009.

"My conscience is talking to me, saying 'Tara, don't send this. Are you crazy?' I sent it anyway," she said.

Fitzgerald said she maintained contact with Shaikh, both through official Dell channels and through his personal e-mail and cell phone. Message logs obtained by News10 show Shaikh switching seamlessly between his official Dell
technical support account and a personal messaging account

40. Dell tech support has always sucked.
The machines aren't bad (not best of show either), but don't expect to get any useful help.

In this case, it seems like it was far worse than useless.

68. Michael Dell is corrupt. He bought off Rick Perry.
Check out how Dell gave Perry a huge amount of money for a small Poe e of land near Round Rock, Texas. It was a bribe and since then Dell and Perry have been almost joined at the hip during Perry's entire governorship.

I would NEVER buy a Dell computer.

a republican company.

Of course this happens. I would NEVER buy a dell for that very reason. I'm not a fanboi but I like the fact that when I call Apple I'm talking to an American located in California (and yes, I ask).

it doesn't make it right, but if you let someone remotely log into your computer to find your 'personal' pictures for you, you have to remember that they can easily be saving those off somewhere for later.

97. That's apples and oranges
You have to give explicit permission to allow someone onto your computer, and then at that point you need to trust them not to be stealing your naked pictures and posting them online. That's a lot different than a guy taking advantage of someone who's drunk and raping her. In this situation, she not only gave him permission to remotely connect to and control her computer, but also to seek out and find said naked pictures. Granted, if this is the case, he should have either a. politely refused to do it, as it would definitely be some kind of violation of the tech support policies, or b. done it without copying the pictures.
By your previous posts here, I can tell that you understand that there are lots and lots of creepy guys out there, and a temptation like this would be irresistible to someone like that. Its not a justification for what happened, and yes, I believe she was victimized, but at the same time, she did do just about everything wrong that she could have in this situation.

It definitely seems to me that there's more to this story than what's being told though, so much of it doesn't ring true at all.

98. if a female makes herself vulnerable by getting in a car with male, going into his apartment
she did not give consent to be raped

if this woman ask him to go into her computer, she did not give permission for him to steal pictures and put them on the net.

99. I totally agree
And I'm not defending the actions of the tech in any way (there's just too much strange stuff in this story for me to really believe any of it), but when you start showing someone your private information, be it pictures, credit card numbers, social security number, whatever, you're setting yourself up to have those things stolen. The especially strange this is that she waited a very long time to report all of this happening, after building up a rapport with him, communicating both through official dell channels and private emails, sending him a laptop, and giving him her card number, which he then allegedly used to buy a laptop and a router for a third party.
Just so much is wrong with this story that it raises all kinds of red flags. Since the only details given in it were so sketchy, its hard to tell what exactly happened, but there is definitely something else going on here. So did this woman fall victim to some kind of scam out of her own stupidity, or was she in on some kind of weird conspiracy to scam money out of Dell? Its tough to speculate, and I guess everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Hopefully some more information about this story will come out, because what has so far just seems so bizarre that I have a hard time believing someone would actually be that stupid.

OTOH, she was as stupid as if she decided to take a walk through Central Park alone, in an evening gown, dripping jewelry, at night. The ensuing mugging is to be expected.

Giving a complete stranger, outside any U.S. law, unrestricted access to your system is just freaking dumb.

Or, for that matter, a man (or woman) who couldn't find his financial statements and passwords on his computer and invited an anonymous stranger from tech support to access his computer and find the info for him would be just as stupid.

That does not mean that it's OK for the tech support person to then steal all the info and clean out the bank accounts. It just means that it is really stupid to give all that info out.

the poster who you are offended by was making sarcastic use of dells advertising to skewer dell over the lack of oversight which led to this womans info and photos going viral

hope this helps

103. What boggles me is ... why didn't the other posters explain this?

This should have been a four post sub-thread.

"Dude, you're getting a...."

"So you give two thumbs up to this?"

"It's making fun of Dell using their own commercial where a guy gives two thumbs up and says, 'dude, you're getting a Dell!'".

"Oh, okay."

87. The thing is
its not like he snuck into her computer when she wasn't looking or anything. She essentially opened the door and let him in and then told him about the naked pictures. Something just doesn't ring true here, but then again, maybe she's really that stupid and naive.

Is what happened wrong? Yes, but at the same time, you should have enough common sense not to open yourself up to this kind of thing.

38. I burned my computer and bought another.
Some years ago when I was single and sort of an internet wild child, I was corresponding (and sometimes later meeting) with women and couples via the internet. Graphic pics & e-mails were exchanged. After giving up that lifestyle for a variety of reasons, I then began to think what would happen if I were to die and someone decided to pay around with my computer and managed to find that stuff. So, I took the computer ought in the backyard yard one evening, piled some brush on it and lit the pile on fire. A few days later I purchased another computer.

Depends on how you swipe your drive as to whether or not your data is still there, even then data can be retrieved.

If you format, then do an fdisk, then repartition and format again before reinstalling OS, chances are slim. Yes a forensics team could probably pull shit off it but not 99.99% of the people out there.

124. There are many free 3rd party programs that help in this regard
a few of them do the "format /over-write /delete" cycle up to 32 times(you can specify the amount of repetitions in the software)

according to current info, the law enforcement agencies are able to retrieve data even from drives "formatted/over-written/deleted" over and over about 20 times ..so anything above 30 should be a good bet

but nothing beats a Neodymium magnet swipe...
best way to ensure total data erasure.

You could have just deleted the folders & files that contained them on your hard drive(s) partition, and used a software program to overwrite them. Unfortunately of course, most, if not all of those of whom you "corresponded" with still have those graphic pics and emails, as well as your and their IPs servers and/or the free online email accounts, such as Hotmail or Yahoo! email that were used to store, send, and receive them.

53. A fool and her dignity+money are soon parted
Maybe people ought to have to pass at least a basic computer knowledge test and get licensed before they can use broadband, just waay too many who just don't know enough about how to maintain their computer and protect their privacy. Wouldn't surprise me if it becomes necessary and mandatory someday. I can figure out pretty quickly how much one of my neighbors, co-workers, friends and family members know about computers when they have asked me to help them w/ a problem, and they give me remote access.

Many actually cause others to become targets of attacks, because someone has root access to their computer and can use it as a bot online. I am self-taught through reading books+online and have never needed to use tech support. Fortunately one of the first books that I read when I bought my first computer was all about email and online privacy and how easily it can be invaded. Now of course, the common cellphone w/camera is being used to transmit "sext" images. Stupid is as stupid does.

If it got online, it is always there somewhere forever, and no amount of erasing your tracks by destroying your hard drives or deleting accounts can really completely eliminate what has already happened. The internet is like one big camera taking billions of pictures of text and images being transmitted each second. Only https and VPN for example, offers some degree of encrypted protection, but obviously that info can be had if the server that it is sent to, gets cracked or is intercepted by hackers.

"Okay, do you want me to look for them?"
"Yes, please".
*pause*
"Okay, I found them and put them on your desktop".
... two days later...

"Hi, this is Riaz"
"I *just happened* to be surfing the web and found those pictures of me on a porn site. I'm real sure it couldn't have been my boyfriend to whom I sent them."
"It wasn't me, but if you spend $1000 to send me a new laptop here in Mumbai, I'll work from home to get them removed from the site."
"Yippee! That sounds like a swell idea Riaz!"

My guess... the boyfriend forwarded the photos she sent him to someone who then gave 'em to the porn site, and Riaz jumped at the opportunity to get a new laptop from a really, really stupid person.

88. This has happened before and will continue to happen as long as people
continue to bow to the desires of big corporations. Opening up your system to remote access is not safe, period. When they install the software you acknowledge a blanket release for (Dell in this case) and the disposable serf in India (or China, Vietnam, Costa Rica, wherever, is beyond reach and supplements their meager wage (about $2K p/yr to the outsourcer less then half of which goes to the worker) by selling data to those that will put the data to work.

Remote access for techs is for their convenience, not yours.

We had a dozens cases like this @ HP every year. The corporate line? Not our problem, let em sue if they want.

You can't fix stupid, and this woman was stupid. Now she's infamous as well.

She said Shaikh convinced her to buy him a new Dell laptop in Sacramento and ship it to his home in Mumbai so that he could work on her case from home. A parcel shipping order from UPS shows Fitzgerald spent $195 to ship the laptop by next-day air on Jan. 20, 2009.

How could she do this?
She should have complained to management the moment she even heard such a suggestion!

this story sounds just too wired! (im not saying what she saying is not true..i'm pretty certain that guy did steal the pics, cos judging from his actions..and how he manipulated her)

What was she thinking?

shouldn't such a request raise red flags in her mind?

125. yes so many don't get it.
This month we changed tv servers. Canceled our cable and went with direct. In setting it up they also set up a direct pay. Two days after we set it up on a card we hadn't used for anything else, charges in another state started showing up on our card. Direct TV "partners" with various other companies and most of their billing department is located in the Philippines. To our amazement, our own fraud department call center is located in India. I asked for someone stateside and was told all they could do was put me back in line and could not guarantee the next cs rep to answer my call would be in the states. I asked for a supervisor many times during this all day event. The irony here (which I pointed out to our fraud department when I finally was connected with someone stateside) is this is a UFCW credit card. Until we put regulations in place regarding using call centers outside of the states(that have access to our private info) to protect us against fraud, we will continue with this problem.
