Public university threatens to throw out student for her Christian beliefs
Your AFA is immediately donating $5,000 toward Jennifer's legal efforts against the school.

July 28, 2010

A counseling student has filed suit against a university in Georgia because she claims the school is forcing her to abandon her Christian beliefs in order to receive a degree.

Jennifer Keeton, 24, is pursuing her master's degree in counseling at Augusta State University. But after her professors learned of her biblical beliefs -- specifically her views on homosexual conduct -- from both classroom discussions and private conversations with other students, the school imposed a "remediation plan."

And unless she completes this "remediation plan" to their satisfaction, then she can be thrown out of the school's counseling program.

David French, senior counsel with the Alliance Defense Fund, told OneNewsNow there are some absurd elements to the plan. "Such as admonishing her to go to a 'gay-pride parade' and write about her feelings after she's been," he describes. "In other words, deliberately exposing her to behavior that she finds immoral in the hope that she'll accept it. It's ridiculous."

"Jennifer is not interested in being indoctrinated, she wants to be educated," states the attorney. "She wants to learn about the counseling profession, she wants to be a good counselor -- but being a good counselor does not require that one surrender their most fundamental religious beliefs."

They've turned this school into nothing more than a re-education camp. If we don't stop them here, a campus near you may be next.

1. "She wants to be a good counselor".
Sorry, but that is incompatible with her narrow-minded, judgemental beliefs.

End of story.

3. Bingo...
Funny how Christ told us not to judge, but so many so-called Christians are the first to do so.

4. When I got my
M.A. in counseling the importance of being non-judgmental was emphasized. People who could not get past their prejudices were counseled out of the program.

Sounds like she was more interested in being a self righteous litle bigot than she was in being a good counselor.

26. "People who could not get past their prejudices were counseled out of the program."
As they should be.

Apparently, in 2010 we are faced with a growing demand for Christian exceptionalism.

5. The university owes a duty to its board of regents
Not to confer a degree on a student who hasn't completed the course work and hasn't fulfilled the required elements necessary to conferring the degree. Jennifer isn't "entitled" to a degree just because she's flattened her fanny on a chair in a classroom during lectures. If the AFA wants to hand out bogus degrees based on their demented world view, let them found their own university. They don't get to dictate to accredited institutions of higher learning how to award degrees.

One of the things is they've been fighting a good fight for narrowing the crack-powdered cocaine disparity in sentencing.

I think that's about it.

17. It's crazy that there's even an argument over this
Nobody in their right mind would see a doctor who thinks that diseases are caused by imbalances in the "four humours" or take their car to a mechanic who seriously thought that cars were powered by pixie dust; but people would actually see a counselor who gets their advice on how to treat gay people from the same book written by people who thought that the Earth was flat and that mental illness was caused by demonic possession.

Believing that homosexuality is evil doesn't technically make it impossible to be a good counselor, but letting that belief influence your counseling certainly would.

28. She's in the wrong profession. Counseliing is a caring profession.
This young lady doesn't care about a portion of her clientele. Now if she doesn't care about the LGBT community, it's a close bet she equally doesn't care about people of color as well.

Therefore, she would not be good in the field that she subscribes to.

29. Conflict of interest much?
Reminds me of a couple I met once, who wanted to go to med school. They believed that some of them medications that came from South America, used by tribes there were "Demonic witchcraft" and that bio feedback was the devils work. Some how, I always hoped they would never become Physicians.

34. If you publicly espouse such repugnant views, you do not deserve a college degree. Period.
I support the university. If this were a neo-Nazi student publicly spewing anti-Semetic statements during class, that student wouldn't deserve a degree either.

If she wants to cling to her outdated hate, she should go to a school that embraces such nonsense. There are plenty of Bible-thumping schools that would love to have such a beacon of hatred.
