Olympia Snowe To Vote For Elena Kagan, Raising GOP Senator Count To Four

WASHINGTON — Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe says she plans to vote to confirm Elena Kagan as a Supreme Court justice.

The Maine lawmaker's announcement makes her the fourth Republican to break with her party to back President Barack Obama's high court nominee.

In a statement, Snowe says Kagan has met her standards for a justice with her strong intellect, respect for the rule of law and understanding of the Supreme Court's important but limited role.

She also says endorsements from conservative lawyers show that Kagan has a reputation for a sound judicial temperament.

2. Yes, but....

it would be wonderful to see Kagan confirmed with at least 70+ votes instead of only 63.

I'd love to see Kay Bailey Hutchison(TX) and Murkowski(AK) vote for our fourth female SCOTUS Justice.
Considering that this will be the first time in history that we will have three female justices on the court at the same time it will be disappointing if the other two female GOP'ers end up voting no ;(

I think a few more 'moderate' republicans will probably end up crossing party lines and voting yes too, such as: Scott Brown and Voinovich.

4. I can't honestly say that I care.
Whether she's confirmed just barely or by an overwhelming margin, she will still sit on the Court. And I am not too concerned for what Senate Republicans think or do, as long as it has no effect on outcomes.

5. Well, I do care
because the senate confirmation vote count is part of history and is referred to in articles and when speaking of a justice.
It makes the justice look better if the vote count is high (in the 80s & 90s) and not low like in the case of Thomas 52–48 & Alito 58–42 (I don't care that those two are low, but I want the nominees of our democratic presidents to be high.)
