Lawmakers seeking cuts look at nonprofit salaries.
Edited on Tue Jul-27-10 04:24 PM by Cant trust em
On Capitol Hill, four senators this spring refused to approve a $425 million package of federal grants for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America after staff members looked at the organization’s tax forms as part of a routine vetting process and were surprised to learn that the organization paid its chief executive almost $1 million in 2008 — $510,774 in salary and bonus and $477,817 in retirement and other benefits.

“A nearly $1 million salary and benefit package for a nonprofit executive is not only questionable on its face but also raises questions about how the organization manages its finances in other areas,” said Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma.

While I do think that excessive pay for nonprofit executives is outrageous, I think it's ironic that republicans are choosing this side of the executive compensation debate. What do you think ol' Tom had to say about pay packages at Goldman or AIG?

1. These people that run 'non-profits' get so much $$

I can think of several hiv 'charities' where the leading officers bought new fancy cars..I mean like Corvettes and Lexus's(plural ?) while peple like me who were sick and in need were living in the streets.

I needed meds and a woman who had managed to take over one of the non profit agencies in Fla was living high on the hog in a beach side condo and I was living under a bridge and hungry and needed meds that were supposed to be paid for by this agency..except there was no $ left...

Another thing that reallly bugs me is agencies like hiv or homelss or gay rights throw these big fancy dos in expensive hotel ball rooms and we are expected to pay 200 or 1000 for a ticket to the event..um 200 is my food for a month 1000 is more more than my monthly SSD.

2. The events in hotel ballrooms are typically fundraisers.
They're not just parties.
