from the SF Chronicle:
San Francisco's notorious graffiti girl, "KKKatie," and her brief reign of tagging terror is over. Now, ABC7's Dan Noyes takes a closer look at the 24-year-old Katie Dunbar and the run-in at Bay to Breakers that helped lead to her capture.
Since January, Dunbar has allegedly tagged Muni, the McKinley statue, and street art with "KKKatie" (or, in the case of the McKinley statue, "KKKatey") swastikas and other symbols. The "KKK" part didn't exactly endear her to the racially-diverse tagging community or to residents. You can read the comments on Mission Mission, among the bloggers that have been following Dunbar's exploits. But Dunbar later told cops the KKK stood for "Kooky, Krasy Kid" and was not a reference to the Ku Klux Klan, reports ABC7.
The beginning of the end came for Dunbar the morning of Bay to Breakers. Alton Moore says he spotted Dunbar spray-painting Porta Potties. He told ABC7 that he tried to stop her:
"So, I blew my horn and said, 'What are you doing?'. And, she looked at me kind of startled, came to my car, opened my car door and said, 'It's none of your business, you (censored).'"
Moore, who is African American, said he was calling the cops. This did not make Dunbar happy. She made racial comments. She said she would accuse him of rape and then threatened him with a can of spray-paint, Moore said. She was caught after Moore called 911 (listen to his 911 call). Police cited Dunbar for misdemeanor graffiti and assault and released her. Afterwards, she went on a tagging rampage, marking the Decault toilet at Civic Center, a public works van, a police barricade and the War Memorial Opera House.
She was arrested and taken to the psych ward at San Francisco General. The estimated cost of graffiti damages and clean-up is $10,000. Dunbar now faces felony charges plus a hate crime allegation in the Moore incident.
