New poll shows CA don't understand Civil Marriage and Religious Liberties
Edited on Wed Jul-21-10 04:54 PM by FreeState
A new poll was released today that shows that Californians support marriage equality. But what I find most striking is how much Californians don't understand Federal Law and Religious Liberties when it comes to marriage:

http://www.publicreligion.org/objects/uploads/fck/file/CA%20Survey%20Report%20FINAL.pdf

Page 1

A significant number of Californians who initially say they support civil unions but not same-‐ sex marriage say they would support same-‐sex marriage if the law addresses either of two basic concerns about religious marriages:

– With a religious liberty reassurance that the law would guarantee that no congregation would be forced to conduct same-‐sex marriages against its beliefs, support for same-‐sex marriage increases 12 points, from initial support of 42% to a solid majority at 54%.

– With a civil marriage reassurance that the law would only provide for ‘civil marriages like you get at city hall,’ support increases 19 points, from 42% to about 6-‐in-‐10 (61%).

Seriously - this is what the Federal Constitution already protects regardless of marriage equality!!!

Im baffled beyond belief here

3. Im hoping in 2012 this is used in a massive education campaign
assuming this survey is saying what I think its saying if the amendment is written to be redundant to religious protections it should pass easily.

4. There is only one marriage license.
There is no civil union license.

Well maybe there is some where.

5. People probably stop their brain at religious marriages without
realizing that civil ceremony version of a marriage is also available.

Maybe we should do as some other countries do. Only civil ceremonies are recognized. And it probably should be that way to avoid the religious freedom part of the Constitution.

What happens if a couple marry using the civil ceremony method and then join a church if they didn't previously belong or even if they belong at the time of their marriage? Does the church not recognize the marriage?

6. The government only recognizes civil marriages - they don't recognize religious ones
If someone is married in a Church with no civil license the government does not see them as married. One must get a civil marriage license to be married.

I know of no country that only has civil unions. Great Britan has Civil Unions for GLBT people and is currently in the process of changing that to marriage for all.

Most churches recognize any marriage between a man and woman no matter where it was done.

7. The RW constantly lies about marriage equality.
And this poll shows that those lies work, as did the Prop 8 vote.

I've heard people say that if gay marriage was legal then the government would force their church / preacher to hold gay marriages. I think it is part of the misconception that people have.

10. Me too. I heard it from a ton of conservatives.
That was their major talking point, it seemed. This myth needs to be dispelled.

9. Bloody hell.
People really are pretty uninformed when you get right down to it. Plus, the right wing has been using confusing scare tactics and some folks just are not naturally skeptical of such things.

But still...
