Democrats to Propose Extending Bush's Middle-Class Tax Cuts
<snip>

"Senate Democrats will soon advance a plan to make permanent President George W. Bush's 2001 tax cuts for middle-class Americans earning less than $200,000, but let the tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans expire, two Senate party aides said Tuesday. They will also propose to reinstate a 45% estate tax on individuals for the next two years.

The emerging tax plan is designed, as much as anything else, to clarify the differences between the two parties as they hurtle toward the fall elections. Following on their success with the financial-regulatory-reform bill, Democrats are betting that Republicans will once again take up a legislative battle on behalf of the wealthy. "Republicans are going to have a real choice ahead of them," says a Democratic aide. "Are you for extending these tax cuts for middle-class families or are you against them because you want to protect tax cuts for the wealthiest 1% of Americans?"

The showdown could come as early as August, now that Senate majority leader Harry Reid has decided to keep his colleagues in Washington through the middle of next month."

1. Good. Bring it up before the elections and let the Republicans squirm
Big money, big corporations. That's all they care about.

4. Instead of tax cutting to achieve fairness, how about tax raising?
Edited on Wed Jul-21-10 01:19 PM by Oregone
Why not raise it on the top, instead of cutting it from the middle?

Cutting taxes isn't extremely stimulative. The extra revenue one would gain from a hike could be used in very efficient stimulatory ways directly by the government

And hell, its not like the government couldn't use extra revenue (rather than less). Is America just going to keep cutting forever to appeal to certain swing Demographics, or ever get sane about their budget?

8. This would be much better

however i don't think the corrupt rich DLC Dems would go along with it. Until we get more man-of-the-people types like Bernie Sanders in there, I just don't see it. I mean you are totally right, but we elect horrible people. I'm from NC and we have the republican Burr who looks sure to get reelected this year - man that really sucks what is wrong with people - and Kay Hagan, a Dem, who is so owned by corporate interests that if it wasn't for the fact that she was there to beat Elizabeth Dole, I don't know if I would have voted for her. So this is all I think they could get the conservadems to go along with would be my guess. :( :shrug:

*on edit - I left out the part about it being good propaganda on the Dems side to say they are making TAX CUTS for the middle class. It just sounds good to people regardless of the true effect. We need smarter citizens.

7. Yes! Force them to show their true loyalty
cause we know it's with the super rich.

And you know what - NEXT - lets vote on LEAVING AFGHANISTAN ok damn it's been longer than Vietnam, our country is beyond broke, and there is no clear (honest) objective! We are bleeding an insane amount of money like stuck pig over there. Will the Dems ever learn when it comes to war?

9. The Republican talking point is that
basic economics says you do not raise taxes in a recession. Then they disagree with the basic economics that you do not cut public spending in a recession. Why doesn't the press ever question their logic of pushing opposites?
