Father claims son was killed by another Marine

ROTA, Northern Mariana Islands As the father of a Marine in a war zone, David Mundo Santos heart sank when he saw a pair of unexpected visitors walk up to his front door.

A Marine major in full uniform, accompanied by a priest, visited his Rota home.

I saw them walking from their car, and I knew something was not right, David Santos said.



Marine at heart of stolen-files case dies

LOS ANGELES A Marine Corps colonel accused of leaking classified information to an anti-terrorism unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department has died.

The San Bernardino County Sheriffs Department says Larry J. Richards was suffering brain, kidney and liver problems when he died Saturday at his home in Lake Arrowhead. He was 52.

Richards was a Marine reservist and sheriffs detective in 2003 and 2004 when he allegedly helped leak Marine intelligence information from Camp Pendleton to an anti-terrorism task force he helped organize. He was later recalled to active duty and was awaiting a military hearing.

Four other Marines have been convicted in the case.



Benning-based Ranger dies in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON The Defense Department on Tuesday announced the death of a Fort Benning-based Ranger who was serving in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Anibal Santiago, 37, of Belvidere, Ill., died Sunday in Bagram, Afghanistan, from injuries sustained a day earlier in a noncombat related incident in Kwowst.

Santiago was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, out of Fort Benning.



Pendleton gunnery sgt. killed in Helmand

OCEANSIDE, Calif. The Defense Department said Tuesday that a Marine staff noncommissioned officer was killed Sunday in Afghanistan.

Gunnery Sgt. Christopher L. Eastman, 28, of Moose Pass, Alaska, died while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, the Pentagon said. He was assigned to 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, out of Camp Pendleton, Calif.

A Marine Corps spokesman told the Anchorage Daily News that insurgents may have detonated an improvised explosive device while Eastman, an explosives ordnance disposal technician, was working a bomb site.

Details of Eastmans service were not readily available Tuesday afternoon.




Bliss soldier kills himself in police standoff

EL PASO, Texas A soldier died Monday after shooting himself in the chest during a standoff with local police.

Spc. Robert Nichols, 24, shot himself Monday night, El Paso police spokesman Mike Baranyay said. Nichols was taken to William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss, where he later died.

Baranyay said police went to Nichols northeast El Paso home after getting a call about a suicide in progress. After officers heard several gunshots from inside the home, Nichols came out and later shot himself as police looked on.

Fort Bliss officials said military authorities have investigated three other suspected suicides involving soldiers from the post this year.



icasualties.org reports that one thousand one hundred ninety five American soldiers have died in the continuing occupation of Afghanistan.
