UN Creates 'Nelson Mandela Day'

United Nations -- Members of the United Nations gathered on Friday in anticipation of Nelson Mandela International Day which will be celebrated over the weekend.

This July 18th will mark the first ever Nelson Mandela International Day, as the United Nations declared it an official commemoration date in November last year.

The date was chosen to coincide with Mandela's birthday. He will turn 92 on Sunday.

The day calls for people around the world to take action to make a difference in their communities.

Mandela devoted 67 years of his life to fighting inequality and racism in South Africa, and people around the world are encouraged to devote 67 minutes of their day on July 18 to a humanitarian activity.

South Africa's minister of international relations and cooperation, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, attended Friday's inaugural ceremony at the U.N. and outlined the importance of July 18th.

Alf Kumalo, the renowned personal photographer to Nelson Mandela, is in London to mark the first ever celebration of Nelson Mandela Day. An exhibition, at the British Museum on Sunday 18 July, will showcase talks, performances, music and dance, to mark Mandela’s humanitarian work.
