Utah DWS Worker called Latino Activist to complain about illegals ~~ All info on list found at DWS

SALT LAKE CITY — State officials said Thursday that Utah Department of Workforce Services databases were indeed used to help generate a list of 1,300 supposed "illegal immigrants" that was spread to the news media and law enforcement by an anonymous group.

They also said that a woman employed at DWS had called Latino activist Tony Yapias two weeks ago to complain about illegal immigrants receiving social services. In the phone call, she identified herself only as a state employee. Yapias recorded the call.

State information technology employees who probed the origins of the list were able to determine that it came from someone at DWS, said Angie Welling, spokeswoman for Gov. Gary Herbert, "because all of the data included on the list are also contained within DWS' database. That is, it's a match that wasn't found in other agencies."

The information technology staff has now turned its attention to the DWS database "to determine who accessed the information and when, then make sure the access was not for business processes," Welling said. "That identification process is now under way, and we expect it to be completed soon."

The article goes on to say that by Monday, all of the data from this investigation should be turned over to the Utah Atty General's Office.

10. Years ago, when I worked for the State of Oregon

We were constantly reminded, coached, taught, warned, and instructed about the sensitive, confidential nature of the data at our fingertips. There was never any question that monkeying around with the information was a fireable offense, and the union backed management 100% on this point. It appears that at least one person in Utah didn't quite get the memo, or decided that his or her personal animus toward perceived "illegal immigrants" was more important than people's rights.

It sounds like the AG's office is taking this seriously, and I hope the person or persons responsible are identified and removed from their positions, with prosecution to follow if the facts warrant.

The person disclosing the information was using what he or she had available, and pregnancy status and due dates for some of the women were just kind of the turd icing on the shit cake they were baking. It could have been the starting point for their mean little game, but I'm inclined to think that it was collateral information; I don't know why I would think that.
