A different slant on the headline "World Cup Fans Bombed In Uganda"
A thread has been up and begging for attention for a while. It isn't exciting or pit one DU faction against another. It is a thread that begs some thoughful consideration. (Thank you, malaise, for posting this): http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x8732051

The different slant on the thread's cited issue is this: Is this our business or not?

The US always seems to function as the world's police force. Now we have a case where (it seems thus far) Somali terrorists carried out a clear act of terror in another African nation. There was carnage and much (I hate this term) "collateral damage". One of the victims, who remains in hospital in Kampala, is from my local area. Some right here on DU have snarked that when blacks kill blacks, no one cares. The girl from my area is a pretty, young white girl. Cn we end that faux racial crap? Race is a NON ISSUE in this discussion.

Here is the issue:

Should the US "do something"? Sending in troops, of course, is our usual tactic. The Army version of a teevee SWAT team busting down a door and screaming at everyone to get on the floor. Do we send in helicopters and fire rockets at "suspected terrorist camps"? Do we send in F-117s from Kansas (or wherever they're based) to bomb the fuck out of some jungle clearing?

What do we do?

Maybe launch a mission from Aviano or some carrier group on station nearby?

Or maybe the best thing to do is NOTHING.

Maybe some police or intelligence help at the periphery, but how about we let the affected countries do what they feel is best for them?

What do you think?

What do we do?

2. Peace loving means we let other people kill each other and we stay out of it

3. We're already doing quite a bit in that part of the world, actually.
Al Shabaab is new to many here, I understand. But our spies and dollars are already hard at work in Somalia, and have been for more than a decade; the only debate is whether current tactics are working.
