HOUSTON (AP) - A mother who claimed the family dog tore off her baby son's genitals was arrested Friday and accused of mutilating the boy herself with a sharp instrument.

Katherine Nadal, 25, was led away in handcuffs while awaiting a court hearing on custody of the 3-month-old boy, Holden Gothia. She was charged with injury to a child and held on $100,000 bail.

Child-welfare authorities said she told social workers she woke up from a nap March 13 to find that her small dachshund had attacked her son.

But a veterinarian and a doctor agreed the dog did not cause the injuries, because there was no blood or human tissue on the animal or in its mouth, police said.

Police said in court papers that the mother had used a sharp instrument to cut off the boy's genitals. The instrument was not identified.

17. thats a very compassionate thought but...

it doesnt really work like that in the natural course of a transgendered person. Many usually "know" when they are 5 and up that they are not quite uhm "normal". In order for a person to succesfully change sexes they really need to be identifying with the opposite sex in many ways but actual gender. I would imagine that there will be a reconstructive effort instead. The child will face much much more trauma being forced into the female gender than if they try to make do as a male. At least that is how it would seem to me... dont know though I could be well off base what with the age of the child and all.

there is a slight difference, I cannot precisely remember what area, but it is impossible to get at it and not cause brain damage.

It's actually probably related to transgender individuals feeling male or female despite have the other anatomy of a different sex.

I am not trans-gendered, but if I had the choice to go through life from childhood as a male without a penis or as a normal looking female, I would choose the latter, just to "fit in". I would probably be a butch lesbian and so forth, but having a normal body would be worth it.

Lets just hope there are re-constructive options for this child.

Brains are gendered. You can't turn a male brain into a female one, no matter how early you start hormones, it was all decided in the womb. Kids who were subject to gender assignment/reassignment as the result of ambiguous genitals or traumatic injury grow up much like transpeople, feeling they aren't at home in their own bodies, only with the added complication of deception by parents and medical people and anger when it's found out. Some of them pursue surgical correction later. Some of them kill themselves, as happened in the most famous case, which involved a boy who was reassigned and raised as a girl after his penis was destroyed in a botched circumsicion. I don't think I've ever heard of a case that worked out at all well, in terms of the child growing up happy and comfortable with their assigned gender.

Anyhow, nothing could make him a functional female. A surgically created vagina is more convincing than a surgically created penis, and with hormones he'd be able to grow breasts and all, but he'll never have really functional (either reproductively or sexually- normally the latter is less of an issue but the erogenous tissue of the penis is generally used to create a vagina in MTF reassignments and in this case that's a non-option) sex organs of either sex. If he can't have anything near functionality in any case, he's almost certainly better off with a body that will mirror his self-perception
