LEAWOOD, Kan. - Leawood Police say that they found a 21-year-old man sexually assaulting a 92-year-old woman in her home just before midnight on Tuesday evening.
Police took a 911 call around 11:55 p.m. where a woman asked for help and then was disconnected. When police arrived at her home in the 10300 block of Overbrook Road two minutes later, they saw the suspect sexually assaulting the woman.
"The officer that went around back looked inside and saw what looked to him a sexual assault in progress," said Lt. Kevin Cauley of the Leawood Police Department.
Police said they forced their way into the home and one officer was attacked by the suspect before he was arrested.
"The officer doesn't see the suspect at the time and gets cold clocked by the suspect," said Cauley, who said that the officer who was assaulted was one of the department's ground fighting instructors. After a brief struggle, the suspect was taken down by that officer and arrested.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was booked into the Johnson County Detention Center pending charges.
"Obviously a 92 year old woman against a 21 year old male, she didn't have a chance," said Cauley. "We don't have any reason to believe that he had been watching her or anything like that. We think it was just a random crime and he happened to knock on the door of a 92 year old woman's house."
The 92-year-old woman was taken to the hospital to be treated. Neighbors say that the woman is legally blind, and lives alone. They say they were surprised to learn the woman had opened her door so late at night but say she might have been disoriented from being woken up from the door bell.
