cuban dissident Guillermo Fariñas, hunger striker, in “serious-critical” conditions
HAVANA – The health of Cuban dissident Guillermo Fariñas, who began a fast four months ago to press for the release of ailing political prisoners, has gotten worse over the last few days, family members and doctors said.

Ismeli Iglesias, one of the doctors attending Fariñas since he began his fast, told Efe that he is in “serious-critical” condition due to complications from a staph infection and a possible blood clot that made it necessary to remove a catheter used for intravenous feeding.
...
Alicia Hernandez, Fariñas’ mother, said that he looks “very bad and low in spirits, deteriorated, with a lot of pain in his joints.”
...
Following the open dialogue between the Cuban Catholic Church and the communist government, Fariñas said he is willing to end his protest if the dozen political detainees with the worst health problems are freed from jail and if the administration commits itself to organizing a “schedule” for the others.

1. Good thing for him and family that his hospitalization won't bankrupt them: no bill.

3. Good thing he lives in a place where it isn't a worry.
His family will be OK when he passes.

5. Maybe if the US had universal healthcare, and ed, and guaranteed retirement income...
... then there would be Americans more willing to engage in hunger strikes in protest of the US government's prison state, as well as the torture cells the US runs in Gitmo and elsewhere.

I haven't read stories here on DU about Americans hunger striking over US prisoners.

Unlike Cubans, as it is now, Americans dare not risk their own personal and family's security because the lack of freedom to do so.
