Edited on Tue Jun-29-10 07:35 AM by HughBeaumont
Really beeeg menu we have:

1. Re-elect corporations and whiskey-throttle capitalism as usual. Democrats only seem to be putting the brakes on and pacing rather than junking this demolition heap of an economic system altogether.
2. Put the party who caused (and would further exacerbate) this mess back in power.
3. Vote Green, which is what 90% of the voting public won't do.
4. Get off your asses and revolt against the Old Man Cabal that holds you all under their boot.

What do you think the American people are most likely going to do.

If Obama hadn't told the Obama movement to shut up and go away as soon as the election was over, the Congress WOULD have passed a non-castrated healthcare bill and a banking bill that didn't kiss Wall Street ass.

Why do you have no firm convictions?

And why do you assume that the left HAS to act like the country has a permanent right-wing majority? The polls have always shown strong public support for a lot of genuinely progressive ideas.

My heart-felt disappointment with Obama is "talking points"?

Where on my air-freight truck route were they delivered to me?

Let's see.... Republican presidents get every truly insane idea that pops into their freaky, cult-groupish minds passed into law without even a popular majority.

The last couple of Democratic presidents make Demo-noises but actually work to get freaky Republican ideas passed into law as well (or refuse to work against passage of them in order to be "sensible").

I noticed that stuff. Right there in my truck. All by myself.

But, apparently, to you, I am just a cog in a propaganda machine.

Sorry L Diamond, I have noticed these things. It's too late. I can't un-notice it all.

yes, you are a cog in a propaganda machine

"Let's see.... Republican presidents get every truly insane idea that pops into their freaky, cult-groupish minds passed into law without even a popular majority."

You really think that is true? It's not. It's propaganda.

"The last couple of Democratic presidents make Demo-noises but actually work to get freaky Republican ideas passed into law as well (or refuse to work against passage of them in order to be "sensible")."

More propaganda. First, because Clinton was not all bad, and second because Republicans had a congresional majority for most of his two terms. The really sickening thing is how so many supposed progressives here seem to be rooting for another Republican Congress in 2010, if not actively working to create one.

238. Dude, other than Social Security, Bush never lost in Congress on anything.
And he ONLY lost on Social Security because of...wait for it...GRASSROOTS ORGANIZING FROM BELOW. The "pros" did nothing to stop Dubya on the theft of Social Security. And his whole time in office, he was never denied anything else.

So yes, Bush DID get at least NEARLY "every truly insane idea" in his little drunken head through Congress. And people like you defended every Dem that caved to him on everything. Never mind that none of the cave-ins ever turned out to be even good short-term strategy for Dems. If they had, giving Dubya everything he wanted on Iraq would NOT have led to Democrats doing the impossible and LOSING Congressional seats when they were the "out" party in an off-year election.

264. that's not what Michael Moore said
check out Fahrenheit 911 at 7:13

"and for the next 8 months, it didn't get any better for George W. Bush. He couldn't get his judges appointed. He had trouble getting his legislation passed, and he lost Republican control in the Senate..."

For some reason his defeats or the fact that things were NOT getting passed did not make the news.

Further, I myself have not spent that much time defending "every Dem that caved to him on everything" like, for example, Joe Lieberman http://journals.democraticunderground.com/hfojvt/19 What I have had to do, on a number of occasions here, was defend the Democratic party against the propaganda that "EVERY Dem caved to him on EVERYthing" when, in fact, thanks to Kucinich, a majority of House Dems voted against the Iraq war. There also was a last minute attempt by Byrd to derail the war, and the 2003 tax cuts were a) reduced from what Bush asked for (zero taxes on dividend income - to half taxes on dividend income, and Bush never asked for the expiration dates either) and still b) it only passed the Senate by a vote of 51-50.

As for the impossible. Perhaps you have forgotten that in November of 2001, just a year before the midterm elections, Bush, for some inexplicable reason, had a 90% approval rating. It used to be standard for 10% to do a role call on DU.

For the record, what you quoted does not say that Bush could not get his legislation passed, or that he did not get his legislation passed. It says he had trouble getting his legislation passed. that means he did get it passed, but getting passed was not easy.

I don't know what Moore intended to convey because I am not a mind reader, but that is what his words mean.

plural. Remember Bush Sr? He wanted "no new taxes" Seriously, read his lips, he said "no new taxes". He didn't get what he wanted. Amd Reagan wanted Robert Bork to sit on the Supreme Court. That did not happen.

Secondly, just because Bush didn't get EVERY thing he wanted, does not mean he didn't get enough of the things he wanted to create a huge stinkin mess with just two rounds of tax cuts and two wars. That's quite enough to get worked up about, but it still does not mean he got EVERY thing he wanted.

In fact, check this out. Four of his vetoes were over-ridden, compared to only two for WJ Clinton, and Clinton vetoed the Republican Congress 37 times! I bet that would not have happened if Dole was President.

Not exactly correct. Bush did say "Read my lips, no new taxes." However, never vetoed the bill, as he could have. Instead, he compromised with Democrats on a bill that technically created no new taxes, probably hoping he could save face on a technicality. And signed it.

What his post says. the conventional "wisdom" is that center right politicians do not have to pay any attention to anyone left of center right because "the left has no place else to go," meaning the left will vote Democratic, come hell or high water. We'll never vote Republican (unless it's DNC approved Crist, I guess).

Further, we won't stay home or vote third party because we won't risk helping the Republicans by so doing. (Florida 2000: Be afraid. Be very afraid. Booga. Booga.)

So, Democratic politians who want to win elections should therefore keep going right, in the hope of picking up a right leaning Independent vote or two. Until it won't much matter who wins or loses an election, I guess, because the two major parties will have become the Republicans with (R)s after their names and the Republicans with (D)s after their names, whom I dubbed the Republicrats and the Demlicans. (Liquid Diamond may consider that a victory--totally defeating the left. Guesss/he forgets that also means that the Republicans will have totally defeated the Democrats, if only by absorbing them, Borglike. It's Democratic legislations and principles they fear, not a (D) behind a name, after all.)

And, that "reasoning" (we own you), of course, is 100% correct, and always will be. Just ask U.S. Senator Martha Coakley about disaffected liberal Democrats turning out to vote for her, especially in Boston, THE most liberal part of the most liberal state. (everyone asked why she conceded so soon, before most votes were counted. Her campaign explained: "She knew it was over as soon as she saw the Boston turnout numbers.")

ETA: The meme has been so totally believed that the Rahm twerp has no compunction about publicly calling liberals "retards"--and then apologizing only to Palin, and persisting in that glaring omission, even after it was pointed out from all around the planet. Another meme, btw: Independents (across the nation) lean right.

I think the strategy all along has been to hang on to the left, by lying to us, as long as they still needed us while they moved the party to the right. At some point we would be expendable and the truth would start being revealed. Now they are showing us all of their cards. Right wing programs and policies are being openly advocated. No attempt is being made to disguise the agenda. No attempts at persuasion or logical arguments are happening anymore, they are just going right for the jugular. We have entered a new phase.

229. One thing I've noticed, these are often the same people who are inordinately fond of calling
people "stupid". They love the idea of an elite group of "smart" people ruling from on high. They identify with heirarchal rule and authoritarianism.

People are NOT stupid. They actually DO know when they're getting fucked over. They may not understand the mechanisms behind that fucking over -- because they've rarely, if ever, been exposed to anything approaching the truth of how those mechanisms have been put in place and by whom -- but they do know they're being lied to and exploited.

And for those who want to keep the curtain pulled tight, who want to protect the powerful by insisting on "realism" and "pragmatism", there is no greater fear than seeing people waking up and refusing to go along with the program.

The "owned" rebelling against the "owners" -- it's intolerable!

310. While we're at it, let's not let "pragmatism" or "realism" get hijacked

"Pragmatism" is measured by what actually *works,* not that which can be readily achieved, or that which is politically expedient, regardless of whether and to what degree it works. It's a good goal, properly utilized.

"Realism" is the correspondence of belief to an objective existence. Or something like that. Again, it shouldn't be a rationale for compromising or abandoning the good, or the "pragmatic." Particularly in politics, just because something "is" doesn't mean it's ideal, or correct, or even reflectiv of "reality."

What we're really talking about here is whether responsible political action comprises picking a group or a leader, and giving unquestioning support vs. an ongoing process of critique and critical thinking.

We know where Chuckles stands. :)

Excellent observation.

And yes, centrism as understood today flows from a technocratic elitism, a love of authoritarianism and an imagination that their education and high marks from employers/clients makes them vicariously part of the ruling elite.

410. +1 for "People are NOT stupid."
Sure, people fall for stupid RW memes, but that's often because the RW appeals to their sense of hurt and outrage.

The Palins and the Becks of the world would be much poorer without a populace that feels disenfranchised, ignored, and angry.

at least they are starting to be honest with us, if there is a silver lining. The pretenses have worn out their welcome in the corporatist agenda, the revelation that most Americans don't give a shit and aren't really paying attention and the "media" will not out them has had a sobering affect on this whole charade..

why are you so worked up? Will that little mantra go away the moment Democrats lose seats because of all this sensible woodchucking?

Somehow, I doubt it. If the past is any indication, the Chuckles of the party will respond by saying that these loses prove that liberals cannot be counted on and should therefore be ignored.

224. exactly
"If they're a 'small, insignificant minority' why are you so worked up?"

That is an excellent question. Could it be that if what we are saying started to get to the general public their arguments would be demolished and would crumble? I think the cartoon that drove people over the edge is just the beginning of this - our message getting to the public - and those wishing to control the message and drive the party to the right greatly fear that. They know that on a level playing field they would not stand a chance. While their arguments might harass and intimidate people within activist circles, they do not stand a chance out there in the larger world.

The title was somthing like "I hate you, I wish you were dead, but first would you drive me to the mall?"

Chuckles could write a book called "We hate you, STFU & go away - but first vote for us in November"

Edited on Wed Jun-30-10 12:57 AM by flyarm
perhaps your mother didn't teach you that..or If she did , you ignored her ..or you sat out history in school..here is a refresher...

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

We the people own the parties of our politicians/employees..we are their employers..we hire them and we can fire them..each and every one of them.

All the childish slogans in the world will never allow me to be owned by anyone!

Got that..and you, nor anyone else will intimidate me..or play off your foolish slogans.. into thinking other wise.

You dear, need a little talk with your mom..or you need to open a history book!

Start at the Reagan revolution..see how Dem's were owned by the Democratic party then..and see what the foolish kind of thinking you are playing with, and arrogant thinking such as yours did to this nation.

NO ONE owns me. That would be the difference between those who make their decisions based on principle and those who do not. And it's your self defeating attitude that allows the party to continue its rightward push because apparently you are under the impression that a slight rightward push isn't as bad as a staunch rightward push. Meanwhile the push is still to the right and you're so deluded you think it's going left.

There's a word for such misfires in logic but I shan't bother since it'll get my post deleted.

43. LOL I think we have a winner for Chuckles.
It is not pragmatism to actively promote the enemy's agenda.

Oh, and pragmatism is not a value. It is the abdication of values.

While reality dictates that pragmatism not be overlooked as a tool to move forward, now is not the time for it. The founders were pragmatic in allowing slavery to continue. In doing so, they just kicked the can down the road in order to gain a Union. Were they right to do so? Who knows. But, I do know that the war that eventually ensued was far worse than what may have happened if they hadn't.

And, it was continued advocacy in the face of that pragmatic decision that eventually ended slavery in America.

I much prefer advocacy over pragmatism. Pragmatism never changes anything.

IMHO

54. ha! in '09 I literally had one Loyalist say that the Compromise of 1850
was caused by "partisanSHIT" and we thus had to embrace WH bipartisanship (Gates, McChrystal, Petraeus, Geithner, and down with Dean and Sheehan)

of course, Manichean partisanship is as much a part of their arsenal as National Unity--the party becomes "us," and Dem conservatism is excused since "they're the only party to pass liberal laws." well, guess what, the GOP FREED THE SLAVES. of course, to rebut that point they'd have to shift from vacuous labels to focus on the policies--and that's the last thing they want!

237. 1850
There was no Republican party in 1850.

The agreement - a set of five bills - was negotiated between the Whigs and the Democrats.

1. California was entered as a free state.

2. New Mexico and Utah were each allowed to use popular sovereignty to decide the issue of slavery. In other words, the people would pick whether the states would be free or slave.

3. The Republic of Texas gave up lands that it claimed in present day New Mexico and received $10 million to pay its debt to Mexico.

4. The slave trade was abolished in the District of Columbia.

5. The Fugitive Slave Act made any federal official who did not arrest a runaway slave liable to pay a fine. This was the most controversial part of the Compromise of 1850 and caused many abolitionists to increase their efforts against slavery.

Of all the bills that made up the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act was the most controversial. It required citizens to assist in the recovery of fugitive slaves. It denied a fugitive's right to a jury trial. (Cases would instead be handled by special commissioners -- commissioners who would be paid $5 if an alleged fugitive were released and $10 if he or she were sent away with the claimant.) The act called for changes in filing for a claim, making the process easier for slave owners. Also, according to the act, there would be more federal officials responsible for enforcing the law.

For slaves attempting to build lives in the North, the new law was disaster. Many left their homes and fled to Canada. During the next ten years, an estimated 20,000 blacks moved to the neighboring country. For Harriet Jacobs, a fugitive living in New York, passage of the law was "the beginning of a reign of terror to the colored population." She stayed put, even after learning that slave catchers were hired to track her down. Anthony Burns, a fugitive living in Boston, was one of many who were captured and returned to slavery. Free blacks, too, were captured and sent to the South. With no legal right to plead their cases, they were completely defenseless.

Passage of the Fugitive Slave Act made abolitionists all the more resolved to put an end to slavery. The Underground Railroad became more active, reaching its peak between 1850 and 1860. The act also brought the subject of slavery before the nation. Many who had previously been ambivalent about slavery now took a definitive stance against the institution.

347. That's OK. "Pragmatism" isn't particularly pragmatic.
Throwing away barganing chips, shushing your activist wing instead of using them to play good cop/bad cop, giving someone who consistently acted against your own party all his congressional privileges and chairmanships without having some "insurance" that he'll go along with your major initiatives, not "painting black hats" on an opposition that's a veritable black hat factory...

Not too long ago, I started a thread with a similar statement in General Discussion: Presidency (www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=vi... ), was indirectly accused of plagiarism, and was shown a palpable level of disdain - even the invisible displeasure factor manifested itself in a subzero recommendation number.

71. Nice Liberal-Bashing Thread
Let's demonize most of the party (85%+) who support Obama, his policies and his Presidency.

I can't say it any better than this commenter at Salon.com: http://letters.salon.com/ent/comics/this_modern_world/2...

It must be nice...

...to be able to pull out old Gush/Bore gags that mock "sensible liberals" and still get paid for it. And it must be hard for you, Tom, to criticize the president, because simply no one from the left is criticizing him, and people who do so are thrown in gulags or something. You're so brave!

Honestly, this feels like Clinton '94 and Gore '00 all over again, where normally smart liberals got pissed off at some necessary compromises and pulled their support for the Democrats. Has that worked before? Have you ever thought that the president, or other Democrats, don't take the left seriously because they know that the left will turn their backs the second the president or congress has to compromise? Because that's what's happened every time Democrats have been in power during my lifetime. We're our own worst enemy. You want political power, Tom-stop patting yourself on the back for making tired criticisms of "sensible liberals" and learn how to persuade people who don't agree with you.

Also, it won't be Palin in 2012--it will be Tim Pawlenty, or Bob McDonnell (VA governor), or some other Republican who, like GW Bush, can tack center for a national election. This will happen because the left flank will lose enough votes voting for Nader or some other pipe dream (or not voting at all), and some "moderates" will fall for the "sensible republican." Take politics seriously Tom-it sucks, but oversimplifying problems doesn't help anyone.

82. that is false
So, under the bus with TT then? LOL.

First of all, of course a large percentage of Democrats would support a Democratic administration. 85% is not so hot, by the way, and that is the only category that the numbers are any good at all. The approval ratings from the general public are flat and falling, maybe the worst for any Democratic party administration in modern times.

Nevertheless, there is no way that the people being skewered in the cartoon are the same people as that 85% number you cite. I think it may be 10% whom he is talking about.

It is also false to claim that objecting to the Democratic party, or anyone else, moving to the right somehow magically helps the right.

We have a relatively small, but influential number of people saying that "we favor (insert left wing position) but we must face reality and support (insert right wing position.) This is never going to fly with the general public, is no longer being accepted by most people.

Moving to the right helps the right. Moving to the left does not help the right. Period.

87. lol And why does Tom think Obama doesn't use the bully pulpit?
On health care he made a major speech to a joint session of Congress, made it the focus of the state of the union (which is when the momentum turned in favor of passage) and did so many TV shows and town halls that he was being accused of over-exposure. What else does Tom think using the bully pulpit is?

I don't think too many liberals have a problem with fair criticism of Obama. Maybe the problem isn't that Tom and so many others are brave martyrs being crucified for criticizing Obama. Maybe the problem is that many of their arguments are weak bullshit and they would rather sling mud at others than admit it.

I just wrote: "Maybe the problem isn't that Tom and so many others are brave martyrs being crucified for criticizing Obama. Maybe the problem is that many of their arguments are weak bullshit and they would rather sling mud at others than admit it."

You just provided the perfect example. I'm a radical with enough skepticism to not accept every word by any pundit (left or right) without question.

Seriously, the idea that Obama hasn't been out there using the bully pulpit is delusional. Living in the real world and using critical thinking skills doesn't make me less liberal.

The assumption that anyone who doesn't unquestionably accept every criticism against Obama must be for the status quo is the kind of knee-jerk insult that makes discussion on DU nearly impossible.

75. He contradicts himself in panel 4
He wants Obama to emulate Bush's dictatorial style, and as panel 6 correctly asserts, he is already emulating Bush's dictatorial policies. The double standard he mocks in the mini-panel beneath #6 is turned on itself in panel 4. He wants Obama to be a left-wing version of Bush - which means that the "sensible woodchuck" may have a point there in mocking of magic wand waving he accuses the far left of seeking.

Two wrongs don't make a right. As the Rude Pundit correctly pointed out just the other day, Obama is attempting to restore a balance of power that was lacking under Bush, being that the Democrats in Congress acquiesced to Bush so easily. So the major (but not only) source of frustration from those of us on the far left shouldn't be that Obama isn't being dictatorial in Bush's style, it should be that the Democratic majority in Congress isn't flexing its muscle.

We don't need Obama to be a left-wing version of Bush. We need Obama to be a left-wing version of Obama.

79. Not really. "Bully pulpit" is Teddy Roosevelt. Bush's style
of "getting what he wanted" had more to do with public deception and legal fictions. Thus, Mr. Tomorrow has successfully critiqued Mr. Obama for failing to fight publicly for his campaigned-on policies, while also noting that Obama has not fully rejected Bush-era notions of the "unitary executive," all without suggesting that Obama actually become more dictatorial or less ethical.

Brilliant piece of rhetoric, really. And effective because it rings so true.

The 'toon expressly suggests that Mr. Obama might use his post as a "bully pulpit" in the mode of Teddy Roosevelt, in contrast to Bush's efficacious, but underhanded way of doing things. That's the kind of qualitative distinction too often missing from the public debate. This is a brilliant, nuanced 'toon indeed.

So now you are being flogged? So the tiny cadre of those who use blind faith in place of principle or logic are too afraid to comment? They cower under the thread of a disagreeing post? Another of you silly horses.

Your poll does not prove what you say it does. First, where is the missing 4%. You flogged the 85 number around like a magic shield. Second, I would probably be in the "approve" column from the way Gallup asks its questions. Do you have the polling questions that produced that figure or does your blind faith extend out to the Gallup organization also.

And are you sure you want that poll posted up? You know the one that shows Obama's numbers are lower than any post-war president at this time with the exception of - wait for it - the last one term Democratic president. Quick someone send a bandage for that hole in the poster's foot.

As for anyone thinking I "don't get it", I have to say I expected that reaction. There are many Tom Tomorrow fans who are no different than Glenn Beck fans - you can't tell them their hero is wrong in any way, or they'll start putting their fingers in their ears and saying "LALALALALA! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"

They don't like their tidy ideological bubble being poked at with sharp sticks. They read Tom Tomorrow for the same reason people watch Glenn Beck: To have their POV confirmed and reinforced. Anything that fucks with that - you might as well tell a fundie the Bible is crap.

winning; no one says that; it's that voting for third parties or not at all in high enough numbers could. Since no one said that, there's nothing to attack really and that part of the strip is pointless.

Then making fun that the POTUS can't do things overnight - well, he can't and should not be able to. How stupid it is to say that he could or should. It's making fun of recognizing reality. Or trying to, which is stupid.

Here's your "strawman," pal (do you know the definition of "strawman," btw?)...

...and, no, I won't call out anyone by linking to posts or naming names...

...and no, I didn't make this shit up...

...and before anyone attempts to impugn my word, YOU search for these priceless lines, and you WILL find them all, and much, much more of the same:

"Keep blasting Obama boys and girls. Your reward awaits in 2010 and 2012 with Speaker Boehner, Majority Leader Mcconnell and lastly President Palin/Romney/Bush/Pawlenty/Barbour/Petraeus/Huckabee."

"(Obama is) condemned for trying to be America's President, instead of the left's President. I hope you people are ready for President Palin."

"So will all of you who say you're gonna sit out the '12 election/vote 3rd party REALLY OK with Pres. Palin?"

"I'd just like to hear the 'logic' of those who are willing to live under a President Palin or her equivalent."

"So you are one of those who's ready and willing to have Palin as president... you may even LIKE it the way I've seen you defend her on this board."

"If you'd be just as happy with a President Palin, that's not only your problem, but ALL of our problems."

"They'd rather have Palin and the Repukes back in power because Obama couldn't save the world in a year!!!"

"(Obama) won't be appreciated until long after he is gone and the undermining of this president every single day since day one will give us someone like a President Palin"

"If Obama doesn't win because of some PUMA bullshit, then good luck in having President Palin (1 in 3 chance of this or better)."

"President Palin will thank you Because she and the GOP know that is how you think, and they will use that to keep the Oval office forever."

"You want to whine about Obama, knock yourself out. But in 2012 when you get a president Palin your whining will be the fault of your own."

"So, you'll be a President Palin supporter then? that's your choice."

"I hope you like President Palin. You sound like a pretty fickle voter if your vote is lost this easily."

Best threat: "a Republican will take over for the next couple of decades."

Wow! Presidents, Republican or otherwise, last for decades now?!

Now, are you ready to put to rest this bullshit that "no one" ever says that "criticism of Obama leads to Palin"?

Or do you need more lyrics from that classic oldies album, Greatest Hits of the "Hope You're Happy With President Palin" Chorus?

You know, like in other countries?

Oh, I forgot, "other countries" = "not America"

and thus "democracy" = how we do it IN AMERICA,

today not 50 or 100 years ago either!

On Edit: Doesn't matter, I'm too much of an anti-authoritarian anyway.

118. what whole bully pulpit issue?
Talk about taking a minor peripheral part of the message and trying to build some sort of case from it.

Whatever bold, fierce advocate, make no mistake about it, this administration is committed statements from the White House that there have been have clearly not worked if they have to be explained. Ergo, by definition the bully pulpit has not been effectively used. Had it been, we would see approval ratings spikes up into the 70's and 80's as was the case with previous Democratic party administrations, not flat and languishing in the 40's and steadily falling.

The bully pulpit and the campaign stump are not the same thing. What works in one will not necessarily work in the other.

177. bernie, I have to share something with you
while you may want to quash dissent on DU and think you're doing a good thing - it seems to me the reality is something else entirely.

people who voted for Obama are disappointed - and not just here on DU. They voted for Obama expecting him to do things he declared he would as part of his campaign - and people have every right to be disappointed. They're disappointed b/c of the attitude taken about HCR from the start. FISA. Because of the tactics of Summer and Geithner that reaffirm Paulson. For the lack of accountability for the abuses of power by the wealthy, by groups like Blackwater, by BP.

to try to censor one of the most popular cartoonists on the left is self-defeating - for you and your cause - which, it seems to me, is to enforce party discipline - no one can say anything critical because it is "disloyal" to the party.

If you want DU to become an echo chamber for people who think just like you do, you'll find you will alienate those who vote for democrats simply because there is no better choice. These people aren't "greens" or whatever other label you want to put on them. You will drive away people who contribute to DU with their hard-earned money that they budget to deal with the current economic outlook. You will drive away people from DU and also from EVER wanting to be a part of any political campaign.

these people are lifelong democrats who would like to one day be able to vote for a candidate that didn't kowtow to the right wingers in this nation. That's not asking Obama to be Bush - that's asking for some righteous and deserved anger and action against right wing abuses in this nation.

If you want to be the DU enforcer - you will drive more voters away than you will ever attract. You will certainly drive away people who would work for candidates, even if those candidates aren't their choice.

So, maybe you should think about whether it was "politic" to jump into this thread and start attacking people and questioning their right to post on this forum. Since you tell others to be pragmatic, maybe you should take the long view and recognize that these attempts to shut down any criticism only feed anger and resentment.

I doubt you'll care about anything I have to say here. But I still thought it was useful to say it.

294. Rain, I'd like to respond. This cartoon is squashing people
It's making many good Democrats here who believe in using sensibility and pragmatism that are good political traits that actually result in getting things done... it makes these Democrats feel like they don't belong. Is this place only for people who constantly rail against progress and constantly fight against every concession? Or are we allowed to accept compromises in order to get the most progressive set of policies in place in a generation?

People who cheer this cartoon on are shutting down discussion that it's ok and even necessary to apply compromise or use quid-pro-quo exchanges to pass progressive policy through Congress. No one likes to give in on any of their points, but it is a necessary mechanism of politics, especially when one branch is not fully dominated by a single party. If the Senate had 60 truly progressive and liberal Democrats, they'd be able to ram-rod anything they wanted through, but that isn't the reality of the situation. We don't have 60, we never had. We don't even have 50 who would have supported the PO through Reconciliation. In the end, the only way to make anything on the truly progressive agenda real is to compromise.

In a perfect world, it wouldn't be necessary. But we don't live in a perfect world.

I'm not acting to enforce anything here. But this thread seriously demonstrates how one side wants to quash discussion of the necessary use of sensibility and practicality of Democratic politics. I'm defending many people who believe in that approach. There are more Democrats than you think here at DU who agree with me, but they are remaining silent because they see how I and a couple of others have been treated in this thread.

Do you care about anything that I have said here?

344. you know what?
I tend to lean towards pragmatism in reality and support the prez as I know how hard it is to get things done in the real world. On the other hand I believe in the more left, idealistic goals that help create the pressure to get things moved to the progressive side of the line. If we all stayed in line the line will continue to move to the right.

Cheering this cartoon will not shut down discussion in any way, shape, or form. Demanding loyalty and declarations of "nothing is perfect so shut up" DOES try to stop discussion so I feel you are being hypocritical here. Status quo is ALWAYS the easy way - if there was no pull from the edges (dissent/troublemaking/"lack" of sense or whatever you want to label the left of mainstream or left of yourself) nothing WOULD EVER CHANGE. So I don't see the griping and whining by the ponyless as a bad thing at all.

I think the cartoon is, as all cartoons, a bit exaggerated for effect. I also think it is pretty true and quite funny. Long live Chuckles.

bernie - those here who think this cartoon makes them feel like they don't belong, imo, have some issues - this site obviously is for a variety of opinions - it always has been - and not just about this one issue or cartoon.

people here who think they don't belong because everyone doesn't share their opinion might not belong if they want to censor others who disagree. that's just not feasible. If they cannot hold an opinion in spite of others' disagreement - that's not the fault of others.

those people may have valid points and good things to say and to contribute - and let them do so. but let them do so without attempting to shut up other opinions.

let facts and information be the arbiter.

there are plenty of times when this has worked. Let the issues be the issue. I'm as guilty as anyone else in sometimes responding in anger to something when I don't know all the facts. People who want to understand a particular topic can and will listen to various sides of an argument - most especially if the arguments are presented based upon the reality of political life - even when people are frustrated by that reality - and not based upon personal attacks or dismissal of one group or the other... this is true for all of us and not just you.

In this case, a political satirist has taken a swipe at people who share your convictions. TomT is merely expressing the feelings of many. But TomT is MUCH, MUCH more virulent about Republican policies and actions. So I think a little perspective would be useful. To attack TomT puts the pragmatists in a bad place because, face it, those with this opinion are in the majority in political office, at the point of power, even if they're not the majority here or even the majority among those who define themselves as liberal.

South Park has gone after "Man Bear Pig" Gore - but that has not and does not change the reality of global warming. That does not change the reality that Gore has done much to make the world aware - and people will no doubt go after him about this latest thing, which, to me, is not worth caring about... as in... a pol's private life isn't my care or concern if they don't turn around and try to score points off of others for this very reason. Gore's public life has been, for the most part, about environmental policy - and, yeah, he has a big house and all that - and he can and does get skewered for that. Overall, tho, I take away from his work the truth that we need to effect change at the level of national and global policy - as human and prone to failure as he and we all are. I mention this as an example - we don't toss out An Inconvenient Truth because Gore has some other inconvenient truths about his life. People here are, generally, intelligent enough to get this.

People need to have the freedom to express their frustration over these sorts of issues, even if it makes you uncomfortable. Rule exist here to contain the level of vitriol that may come with that. After a while, maybe we'll figure out that, if we want to change things, we have to do so at the level of actual political action, not posts on a political forum with bickering between factions.

People post things here that I disagree with all the time (from both ends of the spectrum and for various reasons.) On my better days I simply ignore those posts - life does not begin and end because someone posts something here I disagree with. If I feel strongly about a disagreement, I will make my case. That's what people do here all the time.

It may seem frustrating when you think an issue is misrepresented, but by simply presenting evidence to support or deny assertions, you supply tools for others to use in their daily lives when someone comes along and says... oh, I don't vote, all pols are the same. Everyone here knows that's not true, even when they speak in anger about one thing or another. People may say this but when it comes down to it, we all know that Republican rule is vastly more harmful to this nation. Of course, there's also the argument to let it all fall - but most people don't have that level of detachment from those who would be harmed by this - because those who would be most harmed by this are always also those with the least power/money/access.

While I can and am frustrated about various things - I have used information I've learned on DU to counter just such arguments - to say the things the pragmatists say here - even tho those who see themselves in this way would most likely never count me as one of their own. I don't count myself as one of them - yet I also realize that it is more harmful to allow republicans to gain power than it is to defend differences b/t the parties. The party, however, gives me the most "authority" to speak in such a way when they choose to distance themselves from policies identified as conservative and reactionary.

Those who want to implement policy with the view that these are placeholders for the future have good arguments to make for that position based upon the history of political change in this nation. Let that be the strength of those arguments, not complaints that you are attacked b/c of them.

People are always attacked for their political opinions here, and in the U.S., for that matter, no matter what they are.

This thread in no way tries to quash discussion of pragmatic tactics. It does lampoon them. But this is one thread among hundreds here. This thread gives people a place to vent - people who don't agree with you. No one is preventing you or others from posting thread after thread in defense of pragmatism. To say this thread is a threat to your ability to post such things is a way to attack the post, not what you are allowed to do or not do.

Since you talk about the way that legislation happens, briefly, in your post - maybe some good posts might be ones that talk about how the sausage is made. Posts that simply present facts, without a defense of said realities, is substantive and would be hard to attack - the attacks are the frustration that one region or place does not align with others' political views.

People may still be angry that the sausage is made in this way, but others and those same people can and will also be able to cite such "information" posts when they are simply frustrated with the political process itself - a process that is defined by who is elected from one place or another. Of course, that also raises issues about who is supported by whom and for what reasons at a primary level - but let people fight that out too.

Those you mention who agree but don't post because of attacks in this thread may have a good point - maybe this thread isn't for that purpose. Maybe those defenses are for other threads.

356. Don't ya know that pragmatism is a one way street? Always reach out to the right, never to the left.
Edited on Wed Jun-30-10 03:19 PM by Spheric
To the left, it's get out of the way and STFU.

But, seeing as how they continue to acknowledge that they need us to retain power, doesn't seem very pragmatic of them.

370. There's the frustrating part. All this compromise goes the other direction.
I've heard no reports of the administration pressuring the Blue Dogs or the New Democrat coalition, ever, to move a little left to appease the Progressive Democrats. And I've heard far too many of the Progressives being told they have to play nice with Blue Dogs and others more to the right.

217. Tain't bashing most of DU.
Just look at the positive posts by dozens and dozens and dozens or replies. Then count the negative comments by a tiny handful that keep putting up silly shit about being the majority. And how did it end up with a positive 151 rec count if the cartoon so offends the sensibility of DU members? I think your position is the one with the 15% backing.

135. "Sensible" Liberals in their sensible shoes stomping out all the flickering "non-pragmatic" goals
Single payer? Nonsense!
Public option? Nonsense!
Rule of Law? Nonsense!
Accountability? Nonsense!

The "Sensible Liberal" stance - We should accept the crumbs tossed from the carriages and be grateful. No one says they have to throw any crumbs and a crumb is at least on the path to a loaf, right? Ok, we still die from only getting crumbs, but be positive! Baby steps, incremental ism is the way to success. Next we'll work on the crust and in a few short years a slice. Patience!

All accompanied by the chorus of "Whiners!","No pony, yet?" and
"Palin would be so much better, right?"

Tom Tomorrow is my hero. He's all about the disconnect and it doesn't matter if it's coming from the right or the left.

390. Oh dear, I actually remember that year well
Edited on Thu Jul-01-10 12:18 PM by Mimosa
I was 3 or so years short of voting age but I remember it well. It was after I first awoke politically, in April 1968 when Martin Luther king was murdered. then shortly thereafter, another traumatic assassination, Robert F. Kennedy.

Both men opposed the war, both were too far left on social justice issues. :(

Anyhow, at first I thought Chuckles the Sensible Woodchuck was annoying. Now that I've gotten to know him better, he's sort of cute. ;)
