British get natural McNuggets, Americans get the bad McNuggets

All McNuggets not created equal

All McDonald’s nuggets are not created equal.

U.S. McNuggets not only contain more calories and fat than their British counterparts, but also chemicals not found across the Atlantic.

CNN investigated the differences after receiving a blog comment asking about them.

American McNuggets (190 calories, 12 grams of fat, 2 grams of saturated fat for 4 pieces) contain the chemical preservative tBHQ, tertiary butylhydroquinone, a petroleum-based product. They also contain dimethylpolysiloxane, “an anti-foaming agent” also used in Silly Putty.

By contrast, British McNuggets (170 calories, 9 grams of fat, 1 gram of saturated fat for 4 pieces) lists neither chemical among its ingredients.

“I would certainly choose the British nuggets over the American” says Ruth Winter, author of “A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives.”

McDonald’s says the differences are based on the local tastes: In the United States, McNuggets are coated and then cooked, in the United Kingdom, they are cooked and then coated. As a result, the British McNuggets absorb less oil and have less fat.

2. What part of the chicken do the "nuggets" come from?
On the rare trips I make to McDonald's, it's Chicken Selects and only that.

10. Why pick on dimethylpolysiloxane?
It is in tons of food, McNuggets really aren't special here.

McDonald's adds it to their fry oil to cut down on foaming. Hence, dimethylpolysiloxane is in basically all fried food at McDonalds. Practically all fast food restaurants use it: Burger King, Long John Silvers, Wendys, Carl's Jr, Burgerville, Taco Bell, etc. It is in almost all soda fountain drinks, no matter the source. You'll also find it at Dominos, Pizza Hut, and most other pizza chains. At home you'll get it from Nabisco, Kraft, etc.

I'd understand if you didn't like dimethylpolysiloxane and wanted to write a post against it. But I don't get writing about McNuggets and making it sound like they have some strange Silly Putty ingredient in them when dimethylpolysiloxane is so ubiquitous.

Hell, Americans do love their petroleum don't they?!
