Tropical Storm Alex, the first storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, formed in the Caribbean today, the U.S. National Hurricance Center said today.

Tropical Depression One was raised to tropical storm status, the Hurricane Center said. The storm is heading west- northwest toward Belize and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, the Hurricane Center said.

The storm is about 220 miles (355 kilometers) east of Belize City. Maximum wind speeds are about 40 miles per hour (65 km/hour), the Hurricane Center said.

The storm may affect efforts to control BP Plc’s oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
